Bruce Springsteen

Childhood and Upbringing:

  • He was born on September 23, 1949 in Long Branch New Jersey
  • He had two younger sisters, Virginia and Pamela
  • Pamela would later go on to be a full time photographer, doing the album covers for his albums Human Touch and Lucky Town
  • He was raised Catholic, and he said in an interview in 2012 that it was this that influenced a lot of his music


Some obstacles early in life was the he didn't really fit in well at school:

  • Teachers said he was a loner who all he wanted was to play guitar
  • He completed high school but skipped his graduation ceremony
  • He attended Ocean County College, but soon dropped out

Making His Dreams Reality:

  • He knew he first wanted to pursue music when he saw Elvis Presley perform on The Ed Sullivan Show
  • He was drafted for the Vietnam war, but he failed the physical and was allowed to pursue his music full time
  • He began performing at local bars, where he met the other people who would later form the famous E Street Band
  • As he gained fame, he was nicknamed "The Boss"
  • After signing with Columbia Records, Springsteen released his first album in 1972


  • As he began recording and releasing music, he gained critical acclaim, but the public generally dismissed him and his music

His Influences:

  • His relationship with his father
  • The struggles his family went through, trying to live in working class America, and struggling to make ends meet- this inspired his music style
  • The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra

His Breakthrough:

After a year of little to no success, he finally released his album Born to Run which became Number 3 on the Billboard 200 and launched him to fame

He and the E Street Band went on a cross country tour

He became more and more famous, making more albums and going on more tours
