Skype a Scientist Friday, December 16th in the Library
Curious about insects? This Friday, December 16th, in the Library at WIN we will be speaking with an entomologist-- a scientist who studies insects. Marissa Cole is a researcher and PhD student at North Carolina State University who studies the microbiome of termites:
"Most animals don't eat wood, because it's hard to digest and doesn't have many nutrients, but termites have a special relationship with the microbes in their gut. Termites feed each other with wood that has already been digested. I'm interested to learn whether feeding termites different diets changes the kinds of microbes in their guts. I'm also very interested in how some kinds of microbes in termite feces make substances that prevent disease, and in the possibility of farming termites to feed livestock."
