Iron Chef
Week 2 Review
Here's the Dish!
Our second week in the kitchen continued to WOW the judges! Students planned their meals, shopped the pantry and fridge for ingredients like Nilla wafers, oranges and powdered sugar, collaborated ideas, and plated their masterpieces. Their presentations and garnishes are truly becoming impressive!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
An absolutely huge "THANK YOU" goes out to our amazing staff at MTES for their food donations. It is because of them that our chefs are cooking each week with fresh, new ingredients!
And Today...
From an Asian-inspired dish to a lunch time treat to our Chef's Choice, students were excited to find out the daily theme and secret ingredient. Some of the secret ingredients included using soy sauce and pretzels, apples, parsley and oranges. Chefs couldn't wait to roll up their sleeves and put on their aprons!
Emersion blenders, toaster ovens and microwaves...Oh My! Our chefs are learning how to use apple corers, hand juicers, and peelers. Meanwhile, microplane graters and piping bags are helping create colorful garnishes. They're remembering important safety rules like curling their fingers in while cutting and grabbing the potholders before pulling something out from the microwave. The chefs are learning their way around the kitchen!
The Moment of Truth!
Now, it's time to present and explain the dishes to our esteemed judges. They get right down to the business at hand, tasting and scoring the meals. Their creations were evaluated based upon the use of the secret ingredient, taste, presentation, creativity and how well they cooperated in the kitchen. A special thanks to this week's judges: Mrs. Porrini, Mrs. Tilton, Mrs. G, Mrs. Raywood, Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Riviello, Mrs. Gamez, and Mrs. Pigott. We also had two recent graduates from MTES, Ava, and Abbie who is a two-time Iron Chef Winner!
As our judges are given the difficult task of evaluating each dish, our cooks are enjoying the fruits of their labor. While they're eating, a friendly conversation of constructive criticism ensues. What did they like about each others' dishes? What changes may have taken the dish to another level?
It's That Time...
How many times have you said to yourself, "It took an hour to cook, 10 minutes to eat, and an hour to clean up?" Well, that's what our chefs are experiencing first-hand this week. They do it with minimal complaining and have found ways to make it more enjoyable. But, once again, we can't forget to thank and recognize MTES's fabulous custodial staff, especially Mr. Tom! They clean up what we missed each evening, so it's ready to go the next day!
