It's a Second Grade Thing

August/September 2016

What we will be learning in September

In ELA, during the month of September, we will learn how to use our time wisely as readers. We will also work on inferencing and visualizing. We will discuss the reasons why an author would write. Students will also sample different ways that they could be a writer, including making lists, stories, poems, cards, and emails. We will begin taking our weekly spelling quizzes. Below is the week and unit that we will be studying. Also listed is the word of the week that we will be focusing on in class.

Sept 5th: Short a; approach

Sept 12th: short e; aware

Sept 19th: Short i; bare

Sept 26th: Short o; capable

In Math, students will work on addition and subtraction problems up to 20. In addition, they will begin working on using the attributes to analyze two and three dimensional figures. Students will focus on getting faster when adding and subtracting 0 and 1, and combinations to make ten. In Science, students will be learning how to work like a scientist and use tools that scientists use. They will also learn about the different stages of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). If you cannot make it to your conference, let your child's homeroom teacher know as soon as possible so that alternative plans can be arranged.

If your child is having a party and want to send invites, please send enough for everyone in the class. If it is an all girl or all boy party, sending enough invites for all of the boys or girls would be fine. If you have any questions, please email your child's homeroom teacher.
