During May and throughout the year, we spotlight, honor and celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. As our staff and community continues our equity journey, the inclusion of the AAPI community and other historically marginalized groups will be embedded in our conversations and teaching throughout the year.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a rich heritage thousands of years old. They have shaped the history of the United States and had their lives dramatically influenced by moments in its history.

Student Equity Challenge Day 5 Racial Injustice

As part of the Student Equity Challenge next week, students are invited to choose a book to read and think about how people of color were treated in the story, how they felt about it, and if they noticed any similarities to how people of color are treated today in Palo Alto.

Farm Work Day - May 15

We desperately need every family to step up for our final Farm Work Day. Students will be unable to use the farm if we can properly maintain. So please take a short hour of your Saturday and give us a cloven hoof! See you at Farm Work Day!

The Farm is our outdoor classroom and its maintenance is provided exclusively by Ohlone parent volunteer service hours. No experience necessary! There are jobs for every ability level from weeding to fix it projects and everything in between.

Each family is expected to volunteer 1 hour/child at Ohlone/year to Farm Work Days so if you have 2 children at Ohlone, your family should volunteer for 2 hours for 1 Farm Work Day or 1 hour for each of 2 Farm Work Days.

What is different this year:

  • We ask that only parents attend due to Covid-19 restrictions.

  • You will need to fill out an online “screener” (questionnaire) prior to arrival. We will send the link by email the Friday before. It’s also posted inside the Farm if you forget.

  • Unlike past years, there will be no food or drink shared. You can bring a water bottle.

  • Please bring your own mask. The Farm will provide rubber gloves if you want to use some. You can bring your own gardening/work gloves. We will practice social distancing. Hand sanitizer and a sink with soap and water will be available.

We need Buddies!

May 18th is Kinder Buddy Night. We need veteran parents to share their stories with incoming kinder families. All Ohlone kindergarten families will receive an invitation, even if this is your second, third, or fourth child. We all may need a refresher after this year!

CVC is hosting the event. If you are willing and able to join us, Buddy Night is 7:00-9:00pm on May 18th. Please contact me at dyoshinaga@pausd.org if you are interested!

Annual Data Update - Due May 21

All current PAUSD families should have received an email notifying them of the need to complete the Annual Data Update process by May 21. It is important for parents to verify student information annually through this process, and ensure that your child receives their class placement in August. Thank you for working with PAUSD to get this process completed as quickly as possible!

Family Leadership Summit 5/15 Building Future Leaders

The final day of the 3-Part Series of the PAUSD Virtual Family Leadership Summit will be held on May 15th from 9:00-1:00pm

5th Grade Promotion - June 2

We are holding an in-person 5th Grade Promotion on Wednesday, June 2 at 10:30am. Both FDL and in-person 5th grade studetns are invited to attend. Student speeches and performances will be virtual and available for all to watch. I will reach out to students soon with more details about their speeches, skits, and musical performance recordings.

There are some fairly strict state guidelines to follow (e.g. maximum of two guests per student, six foot distancing between all attendees, required registration and health screeners, assigned seating, and no out-of town guests). I will be communicating more details with 5th grade families in the coming weeks. It will be amazing!

Run, Hide, Fight Drill

On Friday, May 7th, we had a Run, Hide, Fight Drill, previously known as Code Red. Our drill looks very different this year. We no longer create barricades or hide in closets. Teachers and staff lock doors, turn off lights, draw blinds and have students stay out of sight. Everyone did a fantastic job. Mike Jacobs, our District Safety, Security, and Disaster Preparedness Manager, assisted us with the drill. We passed with flying colors.

Unified Field Day at Ohlone! 5/25

We are working on organizing a Unified Field Day for students on May 25th. I am working with Coach Bobby and Adaptive P.E. Specialist Angel Sheridan to bring this Special Olympics Unified event to Ohlone for the first time ever. The event is focused on unifying all students through physical activity, which is perfect for Ohlone. There will be fun stations for individual class sign-ups, including a virtual one for FDL classes. Students will run, jump, and throw. There will be an opening and closing Zoom ceremony and certificates for participation. Equipment will be disinfected between classes.

I'm really excited about this! Here is a link to Special Olympics Unified Programs for more information about what “Unified” means - https://www.sonc.org/unified-sports-0
