General News

Time is going quickly! I can't believe it is nearly mid-December. The students are learning, wondering, questioning, and taking risks in their learning!

Reading and Writing

We continue to study nonfiction (informational) texts. In reading, we are studying nonfiction features as well as main ideas and details of a section of text. The students have learned about the use of features of nonfiction texts so they can best understand the passage.

The students have brainstormed topics they know a lot about from their own lives. They have brainstormed topics and drafted rough drafts. The students are selecting topics this week and we will begin to draft chapters of information for our final draft. Our students know a lot about many different topics.

Some text features to notice in reading at home or around town:

  • Titles
  • Headings
  • Table of Contents
  • Picture
  • Illustrations
  • Captions
  • Graphs
  • Maps
  • Tables
  • Diagrams
  • Labels
  • Timelines
  • Index
  • Glossary
  • Keywords (bold, italics, special colors)

Our study of multiplication and division continues. We now learn about these two operations together rather than separately as many of us were instructed. The students have learned several strategies for multiplication and division ideas, even though we do not always use the multiplication and division signs yet.

We continue our use of the Bridges materials that the classroom is piloting. There are more homework pieces so hopefully you have a better idea of the things we are doing in the classroom.

The students are currently creating a winter town scene where the windows are arrays. Some students were given arrays and others had to build several different arrays given a certain number of window panes.

A New Way to Record...

We are all in a bit of a transition phases as we change the way we report learning to you. While the assignments we do and the assessments are the same or very similar to what we have been doing, the way we record the specific learnings for your child has changed. I was saving a lot of documentation, but I am already running out of room. Many items will be coming home in the next two weeks as I save some information on the computer about concepts understood and those your child still needs to review in our class. Other items are still kept in the room as I continue to use these assignments to help me address needs in the classroom while others are in our many notebooks kept in the classroom.

Thanks for your patience as we all transition.
