Literature

Background Information:

Indian writers wrote poetry, fables, and folktales. They also wrote plays, including both comedies and dramas. The famous Arabian tale about Aladdin and his magic lamp was inspired by an Indian folktale.


Scholars and lawyers wrote about Hindu law and religion. Some Indian literature spread far beyond India and influenced cultures as far away as Greece and Persia (present day Iran)

Important Works:

The Puranas (Ancient Lore) described many Hindu legends. These sacred texts were passed down orally for generations.



The Mahabharata (Great Work) is a poem composed over hundreds of years. It's theme relates to Hindu values and the battle between good and evil. It's longest version consists of over 200,000 individual verse lines and contains about 1.8 million words.
