Smarter Balanced Parent/Guardian Guides

These resources support your understanding of what your children should learn and be able to do this year, and helpful suggestions for supporting children’s learning at home.

Veterans Day at KP - Wednesday, November 11th

School is in session on November 11. King Philip students and faculty will honor our veterans at our Recognition of America's Veterans ceremony beginning at 8:00AM in front of the KP flagpole. Please join us and click here on the link for more information.

During the day, in honor of our Veterans' service to our country and its citizens, KP students will participate in service projects throughout the day. Each team has adopted a project/projects of interest and will communicate with families about what they are doing along with any supports needed. Thank you for supporting our focus on citizenship.

Student Led Conferences - November 17, 18 and 19

We are looking forward to our conference days where the spotlight is on students as they reflect on their learning and progress. Please be sure to schedule an appointment if you haven't already done so. All three WHPS middle schools will participate in this process this fall. If this is still new to you, please see resources here.

Chess Anyone?

Introducing: The King Philip Chess Program!

All chess-interested students grades 6 through 8 are invited to participate in the session, which will include a program orientation meeting for parents. Practice play and lessons from basic to beginning intermediate chess. Emphasis will be on developing basic skills and providing the opportunity for at least weekly practice play. The Program will be a combination of group lessons and free play.

The Program will hold an introductory session on December 15 at 6pm to determine students’ interest for a permanent school-year long program for 2015-2016. This would be a fee-based offering. Please complete the form below to indicate interest.

ASCA Honors Megan Johnson

KP School Counselor Megan Johnson has been selected as the state representative for the 2016 School Counselor of the Year program. The School Counselor of the Year program honors the professionals who devote their careers to serving as advocates for the nation's students, helping them achieve success in school and in life. Mrs. Johnson will travel to Washington, DC in January 2016 to be honored in a ceremony at the White House and be formally recognized at a black-tie gala at historic Union Station.

We are fortunate to have Megan Johnson as a member of the KP staff!

"Jazz for a Cause" Benefit Concert

We are excited to announce “Jazz for a Cause” Benefit Concert that will be held on Sunday, November 15th from 7 to 8:30pm at Trinity-on-Main, 69 Main Street, New Britain, CT. Trinity-on-Main is a beautiful venue for Jazz music and is on the National Register of Historic Places.This is going to be a wonderful event that features both Hall jazz bands, Concert Jazz Band and Jazz Band, and two middle school jazz bands, Bristow and King Philip.

CCO Greater Hartford Regional K-12 Scholastic Chess Championships

On November 15, 2015, the Connecticut Chess Organization (CCO), together with AllClubs Chess and the UConn Chess Club, will hold the inaugural Greater Hartford Regional K-12 Scholastic Chess Championships. The event will be hosted by Whiting Lane School in West Hartford. In addition to prizes, Open section winners will receive free entry to the 2016 Connecticut State Championship. Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) Information Session:

Come and learn how you can make a difference in the lives of West Hartford children by

expanding your parental toolbox to include leadership and advocacy skills. The Parent

Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) trains, inspires and empowers parents to become

effective advocates for children. To learn more about this dynamic program, please join us for an information session on Friday, November 13th from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the

MIND YOUR SPORTS - November 10, 7PM at Kingswood Oxford School:

Moderated by FOX CT Emmy Award winning journalist Jim Altman, Growing Great Schools brings you an evening with Sports Psychologist Dr. Mara Smith and nationally recognized leader in Sports Sampling and Physical Literacy, Steve Boyle of King Philip, Hall High and 2-4-1 Sports. The duo will discuss the mental aspect of sports, dealing with anxiety, competition, and balance. This event is essential for athletes, parents, and coaches of all levels.
