The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games takes place in the post-apocalyptical nation of Panem, which was established in North America after the destruction the nation from an unknown event. Panem is broken up into 13 districts, which all are controlled by the wealthy capitol. The districts are poor, and rely heavily on the capitol. Each year the capitol puts together what is known as the Hunger Games, in which two "tributes" from each district are selected to compete to the death with the other selected tributes as entertainment for the capitol's population.
The book begins in District 12 where we are introduced to the stories protagonist Katniss Everdeen. The story begins on "reaping day", the day when the 2 tributes are selected from each district to the compete in the annual hunger games. One boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 have the chance of being selected to compete in the Hunger Games. During the reaping, Katniss's younger sister, Primrose, was selected but instead Katniss chose to compete in her place. The male tribute that was selected from District 12 was Peeta Mellack, who was a bakers son, and a classmate of Katniss.
Follow Katniss and Peeta in their struggle to keep themselves alive in the Hunger Games which are filled with death traps, deadly mutated animals, and blood thirsty teenagers out to win it all. The tributes from each of the districts are provided a mentor to guide and provide supplies to the tributes during the games. Katniss and Peeta unfortunately are placed with the Drunken, Haymitch Abernathy, who spends majority of his time in a drunken stupor. On the first day of the Hunger Games, nearly half of the tributes are killed on the first day, and Katniss relies on her past hunting skills to keep herself alive. We meet a many of the tributes throughout the story, one is a 12 year old girl names Rue, who Katniss begins to take major liking too, and builds an alliance with the young girl. Katniss and Peeta, together in the games they go through many obstacles, including fending off mutated robotic "killing machine" dogs. Ultimately the duo makes it to the end, but there can only be one survivor...
