TJH Update #8
September 11, 2019
A Message from Dr. Mitzner
Tomorrow is Picture Day!
Looking forward to another great night of TJH football tonight and volleyball tomorrow night.
I appreciate all your support in ensuring that our students are safe and learning at TJH.
All students were provided with a new ID and lanyard at the beginning of the school year and must show their student ID at all times. Most students are doing a great job with having their ID visible!
Starting on Monday, September 16th (just like last year), there will be a $1.00 charge for temporary IDs. Students can buy a new ID in the library for $3.00. Lanyards are also available for $3.00 in the front office.
Hope to see you this week at one of our events!
Regards,
Dr. Kris Mitzner

Student Active Threat Response training will occur on Friday, Sept. 13th during Home Base
Parents,
As we continue to expand our layered security plan to respond to potential threats, the safety of Katy ISD students remains our top priority. Due to the size of our student population and schools, preparing students and staff to respond to active events and threats is imperative. One of the trainings being provided to secondary students this year is called “Run, Hide, Fight.” Similar training is being used by school districts and law enforcement agencies nationwide.
Below is a description of the training that will be provided in Katy ISD secondary schools. - Run, Hide, Fight Training for Secondary Students (Junior High School & High School) o Our student training is being developed using the Run, Hide, Fight strategy. In this training, the classroom teacher will conduct a short training presentation, engage students in a discussion on the Run, Hide, Fight strategy, as well as review the Emergency Response Guide posted in every classroom and office throughout the District. It is anticipated that this training will consume about 20-30 minutes of instructional time.
Though Katy ISD views this training as beneficial in preparing secondary students to be better aware of their surroundings and to respond to an active threat in school as well as other environments, we do understand that maturity levels do vary. Therefore, Katy ISD is providing the Run, Hide, Fight video for parents to review prior to training the students.
The video will not be shown to students, however, strategies from the Run, Hide, Fight video will be used during the student presentation.

These videos are also offered to our volunteers who spend many hours on our campuses. Viewing the videos can assist in providing a greater understanding of how to respond should one be in a Katy ISD facility during a very unlikely event of an active threat.
If you have any questions please contact your student’s campus administration.

TUTORIAL SCHEDULE
Tutorials will be offered Monday through Friday. Students may attend tutorials with any grade level teacher - it does not have to be their classroom teacher.
Students are expected to enter through the front doors a 8:10am. Students are welcome to attend any teacher's tutorial within their grade level. Students are responsible for their own transportation to tutorials.
Afternoon Tutorials:
There is not a sign-up for afternoon tutorials, but if students wish to attend, they must be in the teacher's classroom by 4:00. These sessions will end at 4:25 and students will need to be picked up in front of the school in the circle drive.
AMC 8 Test
AMC 8 test is coming up on November 12th from 4-5pm.
AMC test is a nationally administered mathematics test that is based on overall mathematics learning across the nation. AMC 8 tests up to 8th grade level math content but can be given to any junior high student that wishes to participate. This is an optional test that does not reflect on the student’s progress at Tays, their math class nor is it aligned to Texas math standards, TEKS. This is just to see how they rank against students nationwide.

School Organizations
You may notice that we do not have a Science Olympiad team. Our Tays Science Olympiad teams have been highly successful over the past 3 years. We have enjoyed getting to see our students excel in different areas of scientific study. Unfortunately, due to the extensive amount of time and resources needed to manage this commitment by our teachers and staff, we will be suspending our participation in the Science Olympiad competitions this year.
We are looking into ways our students can explore their scientific passions through other experiences and activities. We will be sure to communicate these opportunities through the Tays JH Update and on the school-wide announcements.
TJH TESTING CENTER OPENED!
Purpose: To support teachers and students having more time for tutorials by providing a one stop shop for retests and make-up tests. This will also alleviate students having to miss more instruction time to make up a test they missed.
Location: Room 1155
Hours: Monday - Friday 7:45 - 8:40. Students will enter through the doors closest to the flag pole in the front.

With over 40 years of experience, almost 15 of them working with Katy ISD, Close Up is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization; and they are driven by a mission to help students become more effective and informed citizens. This trip will complement the curriculum that will be taught in your child’s next year 8th grade American History class and is designed to inspire and empower your student with this incredible experience.
Close Up’s programs are designed to give students direct opportunities to interact with government and history by traveling to Williamsburg Virginia, Mt.
