Young Boys in the Coal Mines
Covered in coal dust, these boys pose for a photo during the short lunch break of a long day in the mine shafts
Jobs Children Did In The Factories
- many young boys worked in coal mines where their small bodies allowed them to pull carts of loaded coal to the surface
- many young girls worked as bobber-doffins in the textile mills going into shutdown machines to repair them as quick as possible
- both boys and girls were used in factories for less complicated jobs like moving items and cleaning
- some children were utilized as chimney sweeps to clean smokestacks clogged with coal soot
