DAVIS HILL COMMUNITY UPDATE
May 20, 2019
Hoping that all of our DHDragons had a chance to get outside and play this weekend! Amazing how bright sun and warmer temperatures can make everything seem a little 'better' (even if today wasn't quite as 'perfect' as Saturday).
Finishing up MCAS this week.. Half-Day on Friday... Memorial Day next Monday... It's hard to believe how fast June 14th is coming!
Please Note:
As the number of items requiring attention, meetings, MCAS and general day-to-day needs (including my own three kids and their spring schedules) have increased over the last few weeks, I am having a harder time keeping up with email and my 'to dos'! I apologize for any delays in communication. I think it is going to be busy for the duration of the year, so if I miss something please don't hesitate to get back in touch. Thank you!
Have a great week everyone!
Kindly,
Jay C. Norton, Principal
*Don't forget to read through the entire update... there are always more dates in the Upcoming Events Section. If you have any questions/ concerns- please don't hesitate to contact me/ the office.
UPCOMING EVENTS THIS WEEK
MCAS SCHEDULE
Our students have been amazing during this assessment season. Hard working, flexible, kind and all around a wonderful group!
Thanks to all of our staff members and parents for supporting our students during MCAS. You are awesome!
PTA Meeting
Child Care available.
Thank you!
Professional Development Day/ Half-Day for Students: Friday, May 24th
HALF-DAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY/ ALICE TRAINING
Friday, May 24th is a half-day for Davis Hill students.
Please note the following:
-Dismissal will be at 12:20 for all students (AM kindergarten will dismiss at 12:20).
-There is NO PM kindergarten on Friday.
-There is NO Holden Recreational Department After School Program on Friday.
-For students who typically attend the After School Program, I do request that parents send a note in with their child confirming their dismissal plans for the half-day. This is incredibly helpful for the teachers/ office staff and reduces our need to make phone calls verifying dismissal plans. Students who typically attend the After School Program will be sent home according to their assignment in PowerSchool if no notification is received.
-Notes should also be sent in for any students who will have a change to their typical dismissal routine for Friday
-AM Kindergarten students will be dismissed with all students and go home at 12:20. If you have a question regarding dismissal for your AM Kindergarten child, please contact your child’s teacher and/ or write a note regarding the dismissal routine for Friday.
Professional Development Focus:
All Davis Hill Teachers will be taking part in building based Professional Development focused on emergency planning/ ALICE training. As the Superintendent has previously stated:
School safety and security are a constant theme in our vernacular as we focus on how to best provide safe learning and working environments. This year, the WRSD has begun the implementation of two new tools, ALICE and CrisisGo, to help our staff respond to emergency situations.
ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) is a national program that has been instituted in over 4,000 school districts. The ALICE protocols provide guidance for staff in the event of a crisis situation. This initiative is a top priority for this school year and will continue into the next school year. Administrators across the District have attended train-the-trainer professional development offered through ALICE and are working with their school personnel as well as local police and fire.
CrisisGo is an alert system that facilitates real-time, two-way communication during an emergency and is being installed on District-owned computers and laptops used by staff. Successful tests of the CrisisGo system have taken place in all of our schools. Local emergency officials also have access to CrisisGo in order to monitor and respond to any type of emergency requiring their assistance.

Teacher Appreciation Night
Nominate your teacher to be honored by the Worcester Bravehearts on Monday, June 17th, for their Teacher Appreciation Night. This year, on Monday, June 17th, the Worcester Bravehearts will be introducing a new First Base Coach, in fact there will be EIGHT of them! That’s right, the team will have eight new coaches that night, and the fans will be able to help decide who those eight deserving people are. From now until Friday, May 31st, the Bravehearts will be accepting nominations for our Teacher’s Appreciation Night contest. Whether it is a teacher, principal, nurse, bus driver, or someone else, the team wants to honor the people who make going to school everyday enjoyable. The Bravehearts are looking for the people who go above and beyond their duties to help their students.
On that night, the eight winners will be honored on the field, receive a custom Bravehearts jersey, four free tickets to the game, and be the team’s First Base Coach for an inning. Please use the link below to nominate someone by Friday, May 31st:
