Your Opinion Matters
Parents, please participate in this state survey by giving feedback on school climate and learning conditions in District 103 through the state-administered, Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
This 20-minute survey is a great way for D103 parents to provide input into the five indicators from the survey that affect and predict school success:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
For more about the survey, please visit the D103 website.
The Nora Project
- Kindergarten through second-grade students have continued to participate in lessons from The Nora Project, which promotes disability inclusion while normalizing differences and demystifying disability. Students learn how to be “includers,” by demonstrating kindness, empathy, and emotional literacy toward others. We are working to develop an Ability Inclusive Mindset (AIM) by learning about ability diversity and to learn that disability is a natural and expected part of human diversity.
- Kindergarten and first-grade students recently completed a lesson on assumptions. We learned the word “assumption,” which we defined as a guess we make based on what we see. We know that guesses can be right or wrong, and we discussed ways that wrong assumptions can be hurtful. Sometimes this may occur when we look at a person and decide what they like or don't like, what they know or don't know, or what a person can or cannot do. We had the opportunity to view a 60-second video that challenges assumptions and encourages empathy. We learned that the best and only way to truly know or understand someone is to get to know them by interacting, asking polite questions, and taking the time to do so.
- Second-grade students received a brief overview of the kindergarten/first-grade lesson above in order to build background knowledge, as they did not receive these lessons last year. Additionally, second-graders completed the lesson, “Disability 101,” in which we began exploring definitions for the word “disability,” focused on diversity within the disability community, reviewed the impact of assumptions, learned about the difference between visible and invisible disabilities, and addressed how disability is a normal part of life.

Self-Care for the Caregivers: Fostering Family Well Being
D96, D102, D103 Parent Education and the Vernon Area Library are excited to welcome back clinical psychologist Dr. Caroline Adelman to help us develop strategies for navigating our roles as parents with greater attention to self-care, self-compassion, and intentionality around our values. Dr. Adelman, of Chicago Psychotherapy, will discuss how parental prioritization of self-care and self-regulation can result in better co-regulation and decreased stress for the entire family.
Dr. Adelman will expand on the classic metaphor of "placing the oxygen mask on ourselves, before we can help others", by discussing evidence based coping tools, self-regulation tools, and strategies for improving and modeling "emotional hygiene" in the family system.
This event will be presented in a hybrid format with both a virtual option, and the opportunity to attend live at the Vernon Area library. The first 75 individuals to register below will be able to attend the event in person.
7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1
