A Message from Mrs. Schall
Dear CES Community,
It certainly has been an interesting and challenging year! I am very honored to have been chosen to be the principal of Carmel Elementary School. The students and staff here are caring, dedicated and life long learners and I am excited to be a part of that on a daily basis. Next year, it is one of my top goals to continue to get to the know the parents and families of the CES community. I look forward to building connections with you, as I have with the students.
4th Grade Celebration: We are excited for our 4th grade students as they will be transitioning to 5th grade at Caravel Middle School. On Friday, June 4th, from 10:30-11:30 we will take the opportunity to celebrate them for their hard work and contributions to the CES school community. We will have a special luncheon in their honor.(Unfortunately, due to Covid safety guidelines, we will not be able to allow parents to join in-person for this celebration. However, we will provide a link for you to join virtually. This virtual invitation will come by email from your child’s teacher.)
Books for Bikes: Our students have been reading up a storm! We are grateful to the Mason's for donating the bikes and for promoting a love of reading. One boy and girl from each classroom will be randomly drawn to win a bike. The drawing will take place on Monday, June 7th at 1:30.
Field Day: On June 8th we will conclude the school year with a fun filled field day. Students will participate in a variety of games outside. In the event of rainy weather, we will have an inside option. Please help us by making sure that students come to school with appropriate attire for exercise and movement, a water bottle, and have applied sunscreen & bug spray. Our staff will remain diligent about cleaning materials at the conclusion of each activity. We will also make sure to provide lots of opportunities to wash and sanitize hands. Additionally we will have a picnic luncheon. The school nutrition program will provide a hotdog, corn on the cob, chips, watermelon. Unfortunately, due to COVID guidelines, we won't be able to have volunteers this year.
Have a wonderful long weekend.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schall

A Message from Ms. Keene and Mrs. King
Second graders are learning about plant needs. We are specifically studying how water and light affect plant growth. Ms. Keene’s class will focus on how light affects growth, while Mrs. King’s class will study how the amount of water given to a plant can affect growth. In these pictures, students helped plant bean seeds in milk cartons for their research. Students are keeping track of the plant growth in a science notebook, where they will record how much each seed grows in centimeters. At the end of our experiment we will share our results with each other.
What’s Going on in Literacy Intervention...
Did you know that literacy is not just reading? In addition to reading, it also emcompasses writing, speaking, and listening. And that is exactly what we do in literacy intervention at CES!
If you were to visit a literacy lesson, you would see all of these things taking place either in small groups or individually.
Every lesson starts with rereading familiar books. This builds fluency and stamina as well as confidence. We focus on making sure our reading looks right, sounds right, and makes sense. Next we tackle letter and word work. This could be learning new high frequency words, sorting letters, or taking words apart to strengthen knowledge of known parts. During the writing portion of the lesson, students are able to compose messages and put into practice what they are learning about how words work, hearing and recording sounds, and practicing spelling patterns.
