Hawk Squawk Newsletter 9/8/22
Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
The beginning of the school year always brings anticipation, excitement, new routines & friends and of course, many important dates. Please make sure you read our weekly newsletter, the Hawk Squawk, to keep informed. We will try to make it easy for you by highlighting action items and dates to mark on your calendar directly beneath my weekly message.
Our amazing PTO is hard at work planning the annual Jog-a-Thon. We are so excited that families will be able to join us this year to cheer on our students! Every student and staff member will receive a t-shirt to celebrate the day. Make sure to log in HERE and complete the information so that your child(ren) will receive the correct size t-shirt. See the PTO section below for more information, including sponsorship opportunities.
Back to School Night is next Tuesday, September 13 starting at 5:30 pm - we hope you'll join us. We will all meet together in the Gym at 5:30 pm and then you will be invited to attend classroom sessions, the first one starting at 6 pm and the second one at 6:30 pm. For safety purposes, please make sure to park in designated parking places in the lot and in legal spots in the neighborhood.
We look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night - we're excited to share more about our plans for an amazing year!
Melissa Griffiths

Back to School Night 9/13
We hope parents and guardians will join us on Tuesday 9/13 for Back to School Night at Hallinan! The evening will start with an assembly in the gym at 5:30 pm. After that, there will be two sessions for visiting classrooms, one from 6 to 6:30 pm and the second from 6:30 to 7 pm. Teachers will present the same material at each session so that parents will have the opportunity to visit two classrooms - or divide and conquer, if necessary. The evening will commence at 7 pm. This is a great opportunity to see your child's classroom and meet their teacher and learn more about the upcoming school year!
Complete Required Tech Consent and Protection Program
In order for students to use school district software or any technology resources (devices, digital textbooks, etc.), there are three actions that need to be completed at the beginning of each school year:
- A parent or guardian must provide consent for each student to use District software and resources
- A Parent/Guardian and each Student must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy
- Families must choose to enroll or decline participation in the Device Damage and Loss Protection Program ($20 annual fee per student).
Please note this if for K-5th grade students only, Pre-K families do not need to complete this task.
New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System. Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements. Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.

District Information
Notes From Our District Nurse
Please DO NOT SEND AN ILL CHILD TO SCHOOL. This page gives examples of when your student should not be in school. If your child is ill, please contact the Hallinan Office at 503.534.2353 and leave a detailed message, or email Lee Gates - gatesl@loswego.k12.or.us and Linda Stevens - stevensl@loswego.k12.or.us
In order to keep all of our students safe, please do not plan for or send food for birthdays or other special events at school. Many students have food allergies - read more about that in the flyer below. Teachers (or the Office) must send out food notices to parents at least 3 days prior to an event, listing all foods/ingredients that will be offered at any event. Thank you for understanding.
Set Up Meal Accounts, Applications
The universal free meals waiver with USDA expired on June 30, 2022. That means starting this school year LOSD will be serving meals under the free, reduced, and paid categories. We will be using the Oregon Expanded Income Guidelines (EIG), which will help us provide free meals to more families. A family of four making $83,250 annually can now qualify fo free meals compare to the USDA standard of $36,075. For more info on how to apply for free meals families can visit this page. We have an online version or a PDF that can be used.
https://www.losdschools.org/Page/7971
Please be sure to set up your student's meal account or apply for free/reduced meals. Look for Meals under Find it Fast on district and school website homepages for account setup and application information, and more.
Last Call: Verify Your Student's Info
Last call: please verify your student's information before the deadline September 9. All students who are enrolled for the 2022-2023 school year need their information updated. The only exceptions are students who are new to LOSD; information is verified during their initial registration process.
Log into ParentVUE and access the Register/Verify tab. If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, contact your student's school. For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website or contact your student's school.
Fall i-Ready
This Fall, all students in Grades 1-5 will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a diagnostic assessment that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. This is the first of three i-Ready assessments we give each year. In Lake Oswego, the Fall i-Ready window is open through September 16.
