Bottle of Notes

Northeastern England

Backround History

It was commissioned June 1988. It was commissioned by Middlesbrough Borough Council. Sculpture was created by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. It was installed in September of 1993. It took 4 years to completely finish.

Artists statement

"We had every advantage we could desire in Observing the whole of the passage of the Planet Venus over the Suns disk." said Coosje. They were both very pleased with the turn out. It was what they had expected. They wanted something that could function both on land and water and that was always found washed up on shore. They wanted to communicate the way of life for people without technology. They did not meet many challenges if any. The process went very smoothly as planned.

My opinion

This sculptue is very fascinating. It is unique from anything I've ever seen. The inside impresses me the most. The variation of color is astounding and the fact that the sculpture is placed by sea is genious to me. It also created jobs for people so it helped the economy also!
