Small Group Binders: Begin September 10th
Unit 2: Addition - 13 days. Assessment is September 18th How did it go?
- TEK Walk- Add Problems of the day with joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20. Work with two or three addends in a problem.
- Compose 10 with two or more addends.
- Focus small groups on the strategies for addition and subtraction. See p. 4-5 in the curriculum documents.
- Provide many opportunities for students to write story problems with multiple representations of various number sentences. 12-8=? ?=12-8 8+?=12 ?=8+12
- Start with simple problems and allow them to find their own strategies.
- Use real-world situations.
- Help students to understand that an equation needs to "balance" (number scales, pan balances are good tools)
- Should we add a word writing problem station using Puppet Pals or other apps? Use QR codes of teacher reading word problems on the smartboard and put into a padlet?
- Refer to number triangle puzzle on p. 7 for enrichment.
Do you have a pocket chart station?
CGI Task Cards for Addition and Subtraction
- Go to common-math-1st grade
Unit 3: Subtraction to 10 Test is October 5th. Preview the test and the one we modified last year
1. Continue CGI type problems, all type of unknowns, within 20. Lots of variety and using a CPA approach.
2. Add and subtract within 20, including making 10, and decomposing a number leading to a 10.
3. Can use the new number line sets. :) Practice make ten with the use of an open number line.
4. Think addition is a great strategy. It is all about the relationships!
5. Count Back 1,2,3,4
6. Remember, process standards is at the beginning of each TEK. Raises the rigor.
7. Must be able to explain strategies using spoken words, objects, pictorial models and number sentences. Must find time to practice all.
8. Students must be able to solve word problems and create word problems. Instruction
should provide students opportunities to write story problems with multiple representations of various number sentences.
9. Students should be allowed to find their own strategies as well.
10. Extend beyond 3 addends.
11. Understand that equations need to balance. See examples on p. 6
12. Use examples on p. 7.
