The Maples
3.19 - 3.23
With the teachers doing reading assessments on Monday and Tuesday, a snow day on Wednesday, and two half days for Family Conferences, this week really flew by! However, we still had some engaging learning moments and a lot of fun together as a class. Below, we share some highlights from the week.
*Important Dates*
- Next week is SPIRIT WEEK! Monday is Pajama Day, Tuesday is Sports Day, Wednesday is "Favorite Book Character" Day, and Thursday is Shiny Day (fun fact - this was a suggestion from the Maples last year that finally made it through this week!)
- Spring Break - Friday, March 30th - Monday, April 9th
Worm Bin Update - Our System Failed!
Earlier this week, the Maples discovered that all of the worms in our worm bin had died. What happened? On Friday we investigated and recorded our findings to try and discover why our compost system failed. The Maples used their powers of observations, as well as previous knowledge, to write their noticings and predictions. Some predictions for future success were:
- "We need smaller bits of paper" - Ephraim
- "We need to put in less cardboard and cartons" - Alice
- "We need more water because it's so hot in here" - Annelise
- "More fruit and less seeds" - Kedara
To Agree, Or Disagree? That Is The Question.
Our current writing unit is focusing on opinion and persuasive writing, and with that often comes a tendency to disagree. Having different ideas can be difficult for young children to reconcile, and often results in hurt feelings. This week, we focused on how to constructively disagree with a friend - and still use kind words in the process. During Morning Meeting, we did some role play activities where the Maples acted out scenarios of disagreement, and then friends tapped in when they had an idea of how to solve the problem.
