ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Students have been given another set of journals for this unit, and this time, the journals will count for 60% of a test grade. The standards covered, the conferences had and effort put in these journals are worthy of such a heavy weight. The other 40% will come from a more “typical” test. We will be doing journal checkpoints throughout the following weeks, so please check in on your child too. Reader’s Workshop is still running, so please follow up with your child about novels; we are conferencing with them here at school, but we would also love your help at home. Students can go to any teacher to talk about novel selections!Help sessions are on Wednesday mornings at 8:00AM. Teachers rotate sessions, so please have your child listen out for the 7th grade ELA call.
READING
Reading classes are continuing to learn strategies for understanding nonfiction. So far, we have learned to ask three “big questions” to help comprehend any nonfiction information. 1) What surprised me? 2) What did the author think I already knew? and 3) What challenged, changed, or confirmed what I already knew? Answering these questions can help the reader understand the text at a deeper level.
We will now start on other nonfiction reading strategies called signposts. Some of these signposts include figuring out why an author would use particular numbers or statistics, deciding why certain people would be quoted in a text, and figuring out how to close knowledge gaps when words or topics are unknown to the reader.
We have a test on nonfiction strategies scheduled for Friday, March 2. Remember that help sessions are held on Monday afternoons after the bus bell.

WORLD LANGUAGES
FRENCH
Dear Parents,
AMMS is pleased to be hosting Linguapalooza 2018, the annual middle school world language speaking competition, on Saturday, February 24, 2018. This is one of the highlights of the school year. Several hundred middle school students will be taking part in the event to showcase their skills in the different world languages we offer in the county.
As hosts we are looking forward to providing a great environment for students, judges and parents to enjoy. We will be relying heavily in our student volunteers from our school who will be greeters and runners. Their job will include accompanying interviewees to their stations, ensuring that score sheets are submitted, certificates printed and delivered for the announcement.
Student volunteers are expected to arrive at school by 7am and will be released no later than noon. They will receive training ahead of time to familiarize them with their specific duties and answer any questions they may have.
We sincerely appreciate them giving up their time and we thank you in advance for supporting the World Language Department.
Sincerely,
Merci beaucoup,
Mesdames Sudu et Blackburn
LATIN
This week, we learned some new language concepts, plural direct objects and degrees of adjectives such as “happy”, “happier” and “happiest”. We did a couple of practice activites involving these new concepts. I am happy to say that it seems mostly everyone understands the concepts!
We are scheduled to take a quiz Friday the 16th on the language concepts for the unit.
Next week, here are some important dates we are following:
- Wednesday, Feb 21 – Quiz on Gladiators and Cultural Background
- Friday, Feb 23 – Stage 8 Test and Study Guide due
Please feel free to email me at mcelroyk@fultonschools.org if you have any questions!
SPANISH
Hello Parents,
This week in Spanish we will continue working with the verb “estar” and combining it with other verbs to make the present progressive. Please stay updated in Google Classroom to see what your student can be practicing at home. We will have a quiz on Friday, 2/23 over forming the present progressive.
Thank you,
Señorita Brown, Señora Clark and Señorita Maust
AMMS INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY
AMMS Instructional Technology is working to build a Virtual Reality Lab to provide these experiences for all Autrey Mill students. Through your donations, you will be providing our students at AMMS with cutting edge opportunities and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow.
STUDENT HEADPHONES/EARBUDS
Our classrooms are equipped with desktop computers and student personal iPads, which will be used throughout the school day integrating technology into the curriculum and providing additional personalized learning opportunities for our students. In order to work independently on these devices and not be disruptive to others, students need to use earphones. We would like to ensure that each child has their own set of headphones or earbuds for their individual use. We are committed to provide students with their classroom supply needs, but knowing that the use of specific headphones or earbuds can be very personal, if you are able, please provide your child with a set of headphones or earbuds. We wouldn’t want any of the students to miss out on any multi-sensory learning experiences.
