BSD Best Practices - Phishing and Scams
Phishing is the most common method criminals use to get into systems. Just a few weeks ago, a district in Washington was completely locked out of all of their systems due to ransomware introduced by a staff member clicking a fake link and giving criminals their username and password. https://www.forbes.com/sites/leemathews/2019/09/25/yet-another-u-s-school-district-has-been-ravaged-by-malware/#6be8f5621a99
Here are some tips to protect our BSD systems so we do not fall prey to this attack: Always be suspicious: Criminals are better at making phishing emails look real. Take the time to check the From: address. Phishes also typically have an “urgent” need to tempt you to log into a site, which gives them your username and password. Forward to IT: If you suspect a message is a phish, it probably is! Forward the message to phishing@beaverton.k12.or.us and we will take a look for you. If it is a phish and you let us know, we can better protect our systems and remove it from mailboxes if it was sent to many staff. Verify: If you receive an email from a BSD staff that you think might not be real, call their direct BSD phone number and ask. If you are sending anything that might cause staff to think your message might not be real, send a short email first letting them know what to expect. Be extra cautious asking for payroll or purchasing information: These emails have been very successful, which means more criminals will try them. One example is a request from your building principal saying they need you to purchase iTunes cards for an “urgent” need. Review these great resources on phishing and protecting your identity:
Honors Diploma Applicants
Senior students interested in earning the Westview Honors Diploma in the spring must get their Service Learning applications approved before counting hours. The deadline for turning in Service Learning applications is Friday, November, 8th. Please see Mrs. Ferris in the Upper North Teacher Cluster for an application.
Chromebook Program
We have made changes to the Chromebook Damage/Loss Program that are effective immediately. These changes were made to provide a more consistent and equitable District-provided technology experience for our students across our schools. The language to the Damage/Loss Program has been updated on the district web page where the Chromebook Information is stored. The text to the Damage/Loss Program is also included below.
Summary of the changes:
• The Chromebook chargers/power cords and styli are now covered in the Damage/Loss Program.
• First incident of accidental damage or loss to the charger or stylus is covered. No charge.
• Second and subsequent incidents of accidental damage or loss to the charger or stylus will result in the following charges:
• Charger: $10.00
• Stylus: $5.00
Technology
Happy Sunday Staff! This week's newsletter brings you some more super cool information (http://bit.ly/stafftechnews20 ). Want to explore more in your classroom? I am always happy to come teach a model lesson, give you a one on one walk through, or help with a quick email. AND, feel free to stop by S216 on Thursdays between 2:30p-3p for Canvas and technology drop in help. Weekly topics to come.:
Tech Thirty Thursday
This Thursday, consider stopping by S216 for 30 minutes of fun to consider how to use WeVideo in your classroom. WeVideo is a great tool for sharing quick videos, having students give presentations, or to create summative projects. Students can get started in about 10 minutes, and advance to create iMovie equivalent productions. Come check it out.
Microsoft Translator
Have a student that needs help with translation? Translate anything now. With this app, you can take a picture and it will automatically show the translation on the screen. Is your student having difficulty understanding content during a presentation? The ‘mic’ icon allows for automatic translation services and saves all files to be referred to later. Though only one app in a multitude of options, it is free, and there is a companion extension that can be added to Chrome which works with documents/websites.

Rewordify
New vocabulary can sometimes be overwhelming. However, there are awesome resources for your student to assist them in better understanding the content. Rewordify, a web based site, allows students to input complicated text and:
Intelligently simplifies difficult English, for faster comprehension
Effectively teaches words, for building a better vocabulary
Helps improve learning outcomes
Just copy and paste challenging text into the site and it redefines key words, builds study guides, and assists in vocabulary comprehension.
Cultural Pass
Have a library card and a thirst for Adventure? Want to go exploring over the holiday breaks? WCCLS has a Cultural Pass for you!
