Choosing Words Wisely

Our story this week A Goat in the Rug, showed us a story can be a combination of many types of genres. This story was written as an enjoyable story about a goat, Geraldine, and her owner, Glenmae. Geraldine tells the story about her life with Glenmae, which read a bit like an autobiography. Inside our story was a how to about making yarn and weaving a rug. The historical information made A Goat in a Rug sound like a non-fiction story. We had a good debate about author's purpose and using evidence form the text to support our opinion of the type of story The Goat in the Rug was!

Our stay also provided a great look at sequence in a story and the words that are clues for us as readers. It also provided us with another look at words that tell us about our characters and what they are feeling. A bonus for us: we are heading to the 4H Fairgrounds next week to see their Ag Day presentation! Many of the vocabulary words, steps, even the tools will be seen next week!

Our reading clubs began their new chapter books this week. These choice titles many come home to your house as the campers work to read to the 'spot' for each meeting. We are working at jotting down notes as we read, collecting new vocabulary words, and supporting our reflections about what we are reading with evidence from the book. These campers have become such deep readers!

Expert projects reflections are in our SeeSaw folders. If you have taken a look at them, check them out!

All About Math

Polygons, Angles, and Symmetry Oh My!

This week we took some time to review angles, our ruler skills, lines, segments, rays, and even a little addition and subtraction with large numbers. The campers worked to create a few optical illusions while practicing creating straight line segments, naming shapes and using straight edges. Accuracy is important in all areas of math including geometry! We revisited the size and measurement of angles and then jumped back in time to work some large number addition and subtraction problems. We shook off a few cobwebs from our addition and subtraction facts! As we started off , many of the campers were multiplying!

We will complete unit 6 this week and take our assessment at the end of the week. Look for a study guide on Wednesday!

We introduced a new app called Mystery Math this week. It has a variety of options for practicing fluency using different timed sessions and grids. The object of the app is to clear the screen or tiles by combining numbers to get to the highlighted number. There are many ways to do this so you must think differently and quickly! The campers and I have used it for number sense and fluency practice. It is free and I think a few campers already went home and asked to try it out!

Fact Fluency Reminder:

We have begun to move through the facts of multiplication at an individual pace. Some of the campers have a little work to do yet on subtraction as well. Each day we will spend 5 - 10 minutes with practice, fast math, and fact fluency interviews. The campers will work on their own to practice using their carabiner cards, take fast math exercises, and once a week check in with me on their facts. The goal of the combination of these activities is to have the campers understand the facts on their own and how they relate to other facts, become fluent with the basics of calculation, and have strategy to find the answers when calculating. You can find your campers' cards in the pouch in their binder! Great practice options are below!
