THURSDAY MESSAGE: 11/1/18
Friday Message, but on a Thursday
Happy day after Halloween!
A long weekend for our students as they have no school Friday, and again on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Folks are in a bit of a post-Halloween stupor here after a large candy intake and late evening. That said, lots of great things going on here at SMS. A number of our 8th graders have been working hard on the cardboard arcade project, which culminates next week on Friday. We have a few 8th graders off on a field trip to UVA today. We are running on an ICA schedule today as we have the faculty/student basketball game starting at 3:00. More importantly, our Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams play in the championship games tonight at Burley. Awesome job to all involved in a terrific season and good luck tonight!
Next week will be fast and furious. We have the Veteran’s Dinner (details below), a UVA trip for a few 7th graders, and the Cardboard Arcade. We hope you have a terrific weekend and enjoy pilfering your kiddo’s candy haul. Parent candy tax is a real thing. Enjoy!

News from SMS:
- Dear Sutherland family,
Recently, our Social Studies teachers at each grade level polled their students to determine if they had a parent, sibling, or grandparent who served, or is currently serving, in a branch of the military. Now we would like to honor those families by extending a personal invitation to attend our Military Appreciation Spaghetti Dinner, which is being held in the Sutherland cafeteria on Thursday, November 8,, 2018, from 5:30 to 8:00pm.
There are numerous members of the Sutherland community whose families have contributed to the country by serving in a military branch, and we want to show our gratitude by serving you, and your family, a free spaghetti dinner.
To accomplish that goal, we will be seating families every 30 minutes starting at 5:30, and will need groups to go online and make a reservation on the Sutherland home page at
https://www2.k12albemarle.org/school/sms/Pages/default.aspx.
Once there, please scroll down to the link titled Veteran’s Dinner under the Announcements tab, click it, pick a time, and sign up letting us know how many people are in your party.
We encourage all applicable students, and their families, to join us for dinner that evening. Thank you for allowing the Sutherland family the opportunity to show its appreciation of all our military servicemen and women do for us on a daily basis. We look forward to serving you dinner!
Andrea Walkup and Jeff Criscione
