Reading
We finished our unit on locating the Main Idea of a nonfiction piece and determining details that support the main idea in Reader’s Workshop this week. We took the post-assessment over this unit today. Our next unit of study will be examining different text structures of nonfiction text such as compare/contrast, cause and effect, chronological text, problem/solution, and descriptive text structure.
The last day to take quizzes towards 4th quarter Accelerated Reader goals will be Friday, May 24. Your child’s Accelerated Reader goal for the 4th quarter can be found written on a post-it notes in his or her planner. Goals were communicated and set the week before Spring Break. Students on Team Silver will need to continue to work on reading at home and at school toward their 4th quarter AR goals. I am encouraging the children to read at a good pace and to read carefully to help them have success on their AR quizzes. The children must pass their quizzes in order to receive points toward their goals on the books they read. The point value awarded for the book also goes down with each question missed on the quiz. Students on Team Silver are given time in class to read during Reader’s Workshop but are also encouraged to read at home to help them work toward their AR goals. Students in 5th grade will receive a “W” for work in their planners for AR goals not met by the end of the quarter.
In order to help encourage students to meet their AR goals and reading goals I am asking students on Team Silver to read for at least 20 minutes a night at home for homework to help them make progress in their books. I am asking students to read for 20 minutes at home at least 5 nights a week. This is the main homework the students will be focusing on for ELA during the year other than working on writing projects or other projects that might need more time to finish.

Social Studies
We have been focusing on early British colonies in North America during the 1600s and 1700s. Before Spring Break, we learned about how the British settled areas in New England and learned how colonists developed towns and communities that focused on farming, fishing, and shipbuilding. We explored the Middle Colonies after the break this week and learned that these colonies had better land for farming and also had busy port cities that were focused on trading goods and resources with England. We will be taking a quiz over the Middle Colonies today and will begin our last unit of study over the Southern Colonies next week before moving on to our next unit of study which will focus on the Revolutionary War. We will take our final quiz over the Southern Colonies on Friday, April 5. A study guide will come home on Tuesday, April 2 to help students prepare for the quiz just as students have been given a study guide the Tuesday before the quiz for the quizzes that were recently taken over the New England and Middle Colonies.
