New Info On Winds
Basic Wind Info
- Wind is the movement of air of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
- Winds are caused by differences in air pressure
Local Winds
- Local winds is a wind that blows from an ocean or lake towards land
- Caused by unequal heating in the atmosphere- when the heating is not the same it gathers up air and blows (wind)
- Sea breeze- a wind that blows from ocean towards a body of land
- Land breeze- a wind that blows from land towards an ocean
Global Winds
- Global Winds are winds that travel over a large area
- Global winds happen when the sun heats the earth unevenly (when they are heated unevenly large convection currents appear and create winds)
- The Doldrums are winds that are at the equator (0 degrees) and are the weakest winds of all
Some specific Global winds
Global winds
- Trade winds- these winds lie between 0 degrees and 30 degrees latitude and are very strong. Sailors used theses winds to help them move their cargo to other countries to trade goods
- Jet streams- is a band of very strong winds in the upper troposphere. Airplanes use these to travel faster while saving fuel
- Prevailing westerlies- these winds lie between 30 degrees and 60 degrees north and south latitude and blow from the west
