Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day - Monday, 11/14
This Monday, November 14 is “Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.” In 1960, six-year-old Ruby
Bridges stepped into the history books and became a national icon for the civil rights
movement when she, a young African American girl, participated in the integration of an elementary school in New Orleans.
Ruby Bridges book “Through My Eyes,” and its accompaniment for younger readers, is one of
several YMCA Project Cornerstone books read and discussed by Alta Vista volunteer parents in the classroom during the three-year curriculum. You might want to spend some time as a family this weekend learning about Ruby Bridges. Here are some short videos that would be great conversation starters:
- The Story of Ruby Bridges (read aloud) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isqhfV3LfMs
- Ruby Bridges (Brain Pop Jr) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPDSoFLMreM
- Ruby Bridges for Kids - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWo4B5n0HDk
- The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day website also has some wonderful information - https://sites.google.com/smcoe.org/rbwtsd/home?pli=1
Join the Alta Vista Home & School Club in recognizing this historic day by wearing purple and
walking to school with family and friends on Monday, November 14.

Volunteer Form Clarification
Once you have completed the Volunteer Code of Conduct once, it is good for the entire year. So many of our wonderful volunteers are completing forms for individual activities and events -- this is not necessary. The good news is that the volunteer forms are "one and done". Thank you for all of your support and help throughout the year.

What is your favorite thing about Alta Vista?
My favorite thing about Alta Vista is the supportive staff and community. I never feel like I'm doing my job alone. There's always someone to help me with whatever I'm needing help with.
Tell us about your family.
My husband and I have been married nearly 6 years. We have 2 beautiful kids. Luke is 4 and Emma is 18 months old. They keep us pretty busy. When we're not hanging out in our backyard, we enjoy going to the park, going camping, and playing games together.
What do you like to do when you are not at school?
Spend time with family and friends, make memories and create projects with my kids, watch movies, go camping, go to Disneyland

Alta Vista Cares: Thanksgiving Food Drive
Help Us to Help Others this Thanksgiving
Alta Vista is partnering again with the Cupertino De Anza Lions Club in its community-based Thanksgiving food drive to provide 170 boxes filled with Thanksgiving food items for local families in need and migrant farmworker families in the Watsonville area. Here is how you can help:
* Donate non-perishable items. Please drop off donations of the following items to bins outside the cafeteria from November 8-19: 1) 2 lb bag of rice, 2) canned vegetables, 3) canned soup, 4) mac and cheese, 5) oatmeal, 6) bread/dinner rolls, 7) cranberry sauce 8) stuffing or 9) 1 lb bag of black beans.
* Sponsor a Family. Our popular Sponsor a Family program is back this year, where for $40 you can provide enough funds for us to create, assemble and deliver a large box of turkey, all the fixings and lots of pantry staples that will feed a family of 4 for Thanksgiving dinner and to fill their pantry for the coming weeks. Click this LINK to sponsor a family. Tax receipts will be provided.
* Volunteer. We need volunteers for the weekend of the Food Drive, November 19-21. We will be outside Lunardi’s asking shoppers for donations and assembling and delivering boxes from our Cupertino headquarters. Supervised children are welcome. Please contact clairekalia@gmail.com for more details.
Thank you for your support in providing much-needed food items to
local families this Thanksgiving.
Safe Routes to School Survey
The Town of Los Gatos, in partnership with Safe Routes to School, is soliciting input on what improvements will be beneficial to school students who walk and bike to school. Your input will contribute to the Town’s efforts in competing in grant funding and designing better projects.
We encourage all parents to participate so the survey will result in a high response rate, which will capture the diverse views of the community. This survey takes 2 minutes or less to
complete and does not ask for personal information. Please complete the survey today: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6PKZ9HQ
