5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
This week we will review multiplication using the standard algorithm and how to find whole number quotients. This should be familiar to students from fourth grade.
Students will complete their multiplication/division (Lesson5/6) quiz Wednesday.
Below you will find the lesson five and six parent letters that explain in depth what we are learning, strategies that can be used, and family activities to promote student learning at home.
Weekly Vocabulary
Factor: a number that is multiplied
Product: the result of multiplication
Partial Products: a strategy used to multiply multi-digit numbers; the products you get in each step are called "partial products". For example, the partial products for 124 X 3 are 3 X 100 or 300, 3 X 20 or 60, and 3 X 4 = 12.
Division: an operation used to separate a number of items into equal-sized groups.
Divisor: the number by which another number is divided. 80 divided by 4 (divisor) = 20
Dividend: the number that is divided by another number. 100 (dividend) divided by 5 = 20
Quotient: the result of division. 60 divided by 30 = 2 (quotient)
Partial Quotient: a strategy used to divide multi-digit numbers; the the quotients you get in each step are called "partial quotients". For example, the partial quotients for 2,124 divided by 4 are 2,000 divided by 4 or 500, 100 divided by 4 or 25, and 24 divided by 4 or 6.
