Teaching Students to Summarize-Quick Reference Guide
Teaching students to summarize helps them remember the most important information in the text. This quick reference guide gives 6 steps to summarization, as well as tips for implementation.
Vocabulary Strategies
Limited vocabulary is the first “red flag” indicating a probable learning gap in a child’s reading comprehension. While vocabulary can be picked up through dialogue and conversation, research shows that is it grown in the formative years through learning to read and building a capacity for reading fluency and comprehension. It continues to grow through the secondary and college level moving from concrete to more abstract skills and concepts.

The Frayer model is a strategy that uses a graphic organizer to build vocabulary and conceptual knowledge across content areas. The strategy requires students to define a vocabulary word and then process the word by outlining its characteristics, examples, and nonexamples.NCDPI ELA Standards Aligned Instruction
Join NCDPI ELA consultants and learn about a coaching tool that helps teachers, and those who support teachers, build understanding and experience with ELA Standards-aligned instruction. This developmental tool can be used for planning, reflection, and collaboration. Developed by the Student Achievement Partners, the Instructional Practice Guides provide a framework for guided discussion about aligned instructional practices for ELA. Along with gaining strategies and resources, participants will complete activities and have discussions around each core action of the Guide.

When: February 13, 2017 *This session will be offered twice: 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00*
