Today we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Happy Monday Buccaneers!
We had a very successful first week back. Thank you for your commitment to excellence! We will be meeting with all of our students through PE classes this week. We will review semester grades, promotion guidelines with our eighth graders, summer school opportunities, and we will review Personal Education Plans. It will be another amazing week.
Today we remember and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a man who fought for social justice, peace, and the right for each and everyone to be treated with respect and dignity. Dr. King's words continue to resonate today. His message of equality and justice are needed now more than ever. Let us continue to strive to be great. Dr. King reminded us that, "Everybody can be great because anybody can serve . . . You only need a heart full of love. A soul generated by grace."
Let us continue to give our best and make this the best semester ever!

january celebrations
Martin Luther King, Jr. "Martin Luther King, Jr., original name Michael King, Jr., (born January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.—died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tennessee), Baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States. King rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which promoted nonviolent tactics, such as the massive March on Washington (1963), to achieve civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964." https://www.britannica.com/biography/Martin-Luther-King-Jr | The Great Kindness Challenge "At the heart of The Great Kindness Challenge is the simple belief that kindness is strength. We also believe that as an action is repeated, a habit is formed. With the Great Kindness Challenge checklist in hand, students have the opportunity to repeat kind act after kind act. As kindness becomes a habit, peace becomes possible." https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/about | Presidential Inauguration on January 20th "The Constitution of the United States had established March 4 as Inauguration Day in order to allow enough time after Election Day for officials to gather election returns and for newly-elected candidates to travel to the capital. With modern advances in communication and transportation, the lengthy transition period proved unnecessary and legislators pressed for change. The date was moved to January 20 with the passage of the Twentieth Amendment in 1933." https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/january-20/ |

I want to thank our SOM staff for engaging in meaningful conversations this past Friday during our pull out day. We started the conversation, reviewed where we are, and now we have to address what our next steps will be. This work takes time. Thank you for your patience as we do our best to be the best for our students!
