Laura McGlocklin

As many of you know, our beloved parishioner and HR manager, Laura McGlocklin, has been battling stage 4 lung cancer this year. Laura has worked so hard to maintain her health, while keeping St. Patrick afloat. I really don't know how she has managed it all, other than the fact that she is extremely strong willed and hard working.

With much consideration, Laura has decided that it is time for her to go on disability for stage 4 cancer, and will eventually transition into hospice care. This was not an easy decision for Laura to make, but it was one that her health required. She has spent many years putting everyone and everything else first, and now, it is my hope that she can take some time to focus on herself. I hope you will join me in prayer for Laura knowing that there is strength when we come together in prayer.

Prior to her last day at the office, Laura trained Lisa Angotti for the HR Manager position. Lisa will now work part time as the HR manager, on top of being the administrative assistant extraordinaire here. We are blessed to have her!

Reflecting on 2017-2018

Year One

As I look back on this year, I'm amazed at how quickly it's gone. I think about myself this time last year, pretty naive about what was awaiting me in this new role. Never would I have expected the challenges that we faced, or the grief that we would experience. Yet, even through the sadness, this year has been full of joy.

Do you remember the first week of school when we had the opportunity to experience a solar eclipse??? Remember how we all gathered out on the playground for this amazingly beautiful experience and the minute it was over the skies clouded up and a downpour ensued? While most of the state saw very little, we got to see the entire beautiful thing! How cool was that??

Another one of my favorite new things this year was our memorable Veteran's Day celebration. It was so great to gather together to honor our beloved Veterans, including our own Fr. Robert. That's a tradition I want to continue!

There was Christmas time, with hallways decorated with twinkling lights and snowflakes, Catholic Schools Week blanket making service work, fundraising for Hurricane victims and the KC Pet Project, a new St. Patrick's Day celebration, and so much more!

This has been the year of firsts, of "Why not?" and " Can we pull this off?". Some things have worked and I hope we keep them forever, while other things were stressful and probably need rethought. In the end, I can honestly look back and say that every single thing we did, every decision that was made, was made for the direct benefit of our kids. If we always keep that in mind, what more could we ask?

Our building is full of hope and positivity in ways it has never been before. It is a building where all are welcome, all are cared for, and all are part of our St. Patrick family. We have set a tone here that even visitors can feel from the minute they walk through our doors. St. Patrick School is a special place, and it takes a lot of work to make that happen.

Thank you for putting your faith in me this year, for getting on board with all of our new ideas, and for supporting our efforts to build a unique school. None of this would be possible without each one of you, and that is something I never take lightly. We will continue to work hard to make St. Patrick School a place where students receive an education like none other, while being a part of a community who rallies together to support them every step of the way.

Summer Reading Project

In coordination with the Mid-Continent Public Library, I invite all St. Patrick School students to participate in the St. Patrick Summer Reading Project.

On the last day of school, students will be given a blank book list. Throughout the summer, I encourage your child to read a minimum of 20 children's books or 10 young adult novels. Students should write the titles of the books read on the blank book list and return them to school at the school/parish picnic on Sunday, August 12th. Parent signatures will be added to the bottom of the list to verify the accuracy. No reading lists will be accepted after August 12, so if you can't make it to the picnic, be sure to drop your list by school prior to that day. Students who return a reading list will be invited to a special celebration at the start of the school year!

Join the MCPL Summer Reading Program and your child can earn prizes while also completing the St. Patrick Summer Reading Program list. It's a win win! You can learn more about the MCPL Summer Reading Program here:

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Print this poster off for your child. Hang it in his/her bedroom. Talk about it daily. Use these words in conversation with your child. Have them practice writing them correctly. If your child says, "They're coming over tonight." Say, "How would you spell they're when you use it like that?"

Will it annoy him? Yes. Do it anyway!

Will he get tired of you asking? Yes. Do it anyway!

Will it drill the correct usage into his mind? Yes. Do it for THIS reason!

Mark Your Calendars!

I know, I know. No one wants to think about next school year when we haven't even finished up this school year. I get it, I don't want to think about it either!

But.....I want you to pull out your calendar and mark this date with a big red circle! On Sunday, August 12, we will host our 2nd annual Prayer Walk for Students and Parish and School Picnic. I am incredibly excited about these events!

Last year, our Prayer Walk was incredibly moving and a wonderful opportunity for us to come together to pray for all of the students in our church and school as they head back for the start of a new year. Now more than ever, we must pray for our children and we know there is strength in numbers when we gather to pray together! Our Prayer Walk will be held immediately following the 8:30 mass.

This year, I want to get our school kids involved in the picnic. I will ask our middle school students to volunteer to help set up and clean up, to serve people, and to help with games. This is a great time for the entire St. Patrick community to come together to socialize through fellowship and fun. You don't want to miss out! Our picnic will begin immediately following the 11:00 mass.
