Curriculum Corner
This is the week that we begin drafting our narrative writing that we will publish! I will begin conferencing with students in the next few weeks to help them with revisions of content and mechanics.
Spelling
Spelling lists for this week were passed out today. This week, students will begin working in four differentiated spelling groups, based on their scores on the placement test earlier this year. We will be working with these words in class and will take a quiz on Friday.
Wordly Wise
We will be finishing up lesson 3 this week. 3C & 3D will be due on Thursday and the test will be Friday.
Grammar
We ran out of time to finish nouns last week, so we will be finishing them this week, then will end the week by learning about pronouns.
Indiana History
The torn paper maps are looking fabulous! Today was the last day for students to have class time to work on the regions. Some students chose to take them home and others are planning to finish at recess tomorrow. We will spend the rest of the week learning about the climate and natural resources in Indiana. The torn paper map will serve as the assessment, so there will not be a test over this information.
Reading
We are starting our first whole class novel with The Hundred Dresses. This book is a Newberry Award winning book that teaches wonderful life lessons about how we treat each other. We will do the reading in class, but expect to see either vocabulary or comprehension homework most nights. This is the summary of the book:
Wanda Petronski wore the same faded-blue dress to school every day. It was always clean, but it looked as though it had never been ironed properly. One day when a classmate showed up wearing a bright new dress that was much admired, Wanda said suddenly, "I have a hundred dresses at home." That had started the teasing game of dresses, which Peggy and Maddie played with Wanda. It was fun to stop Wanda on the way to school and ask, "How many dresses did you say you had?" Wanda did have the hundred dresses, and this is the story of how Peggy and Maddie came to understand about them and what the game meant to Wanda.
Science
We came up with our materials and procedure for our inquiry today. Tomorrow we will work on our hypothesis and data collection chart before beginning the inquiry process on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, we will be wrapping up by discussing our results and coming up with a conclusion. Look for information about our in-class science fair project to come home later this week!
Math
This week, we will be learning about line charts, landmark numbers (minimum, maximum, range, mean, median, mode), and addition algorithms. For addition, we will be practicing the partial sums and column addition methods. On the assessment, students will chose the method that works best for them. As with any algorithm we learn in math, as long as students get the correct answer and can explain how they got their answer, I will never tell them they must use a specific one. We will take our assessment over this chapter at the end of next week.
