Artful Learning Highlight- 7th Grade ELA
7th Grade ELA: As an introduction to their interdisciplinary unit on “Transformation,” our 7th grade students explored the masterwork "Greta the Great White Shark" by Angela Hazeltine Pozzi. Students compared this masterwork to the work of Renaissance artists who also transformed pollution into something useful, and then delved into the concept of transformations created through various artistic media such as portraits, dance, and text. They identified real-life transformations and created a word collage of transformations. They researched and created a Google slide project to identify time, nature, and man-made transformations, connecting back to the unit's significant question. This project allowed students to see how something in its original state can change and be transformed into something useful. Next, students will participate in an inquiry center that will address the transformation of characters from the novel Freak the Mighty. Our Artful Learning Journey Maps provide a visual that tracks progress through a unit of study. Journey maps help students remember what they learned and see the big picture of the unit.

Attendance is key to student success! Please encourage your student to attend school everyday and arrive on time. Remember, absences must be cleared within 72 hours (3 school days) after student returns to school. We also appreciate when you schedule dental/doctor appointments outside of the school day to avoid instruction interruptions. Parents if you are planning a trip in which your student will miss 5 or more school days, please notify the attendance two weeks in advance to set up an independent study contract.
School Safety: Parents, please remind your students to use the crosswalk when arriving or leaving school. The heavy traffic makes it unsafe for students because drivers may not see them as they cross the street.
Health Office: Please continue to provide updated immunization records. Notices will be mailed home as a reminder to all 6th grade families whose student is missing the Tdap vaccine. Tdap is required to start 7th grade.
