News from Nanwalek School September 17, 2023
A note from the Principal
I want to share how truly appreciative I am for the support that we've had this first month of school.
We've had very generous donations for food and snacks from the English Bay Corporation and North Pacific Rim Housing Authority to make our Open House and our Back To School Dance extra special.
We've had several volunteers come in for 'Culture and Community' Wednesday. This is a true highlight for our students and staff. We look forward to this day as a time to celebrate being in Nanwalek, learning from our elders and community members, and learning more about our culture and community.
So far, Lisa Jimmy has come in to Seal Dance with the kids. Pauline and Alma have done storytelling, Jada did rock painting, Mandy made bread and shared sharing stories, Emilie, Terence, Barb, and Krissy did candle making. Rhoda did cutting fish. Nancy Y made piroskis. Our paras (Winka, Barb, Kyle) have filled in with beach scavenger hunts, cookie baking, and Bingo for Books. Our high school NYO athletes shared their expertise in NYO events as well!
This is truly a community school! Please contact Ann or myself if you have questions or would like to volunteer.
We have two openings for paraprofessionals. We have a Title I (4 hours per day) para position and a Title VI (5.5 hours per day) para position open. You can follow the link to apply:
Nanwalek Open Positions. Much of your day will be working with teachers and students in our new reading program.
We have Site Council nominations this week. We have two parent seats open (a one year and a two year). I want to encourage you to get involved. If you are not interested in being on the council, but would like to be involved, remember that the meetings are open and everyone is invited. The agenda is will be posted a week before meetings. They will be sent in the mail and posted at the store and at the school.
Covid Update: We are aware that Covid is effecting many of our families. Please know that we are continuously disinfecting the school throughout the day and encouraging handwashing and safe practices at school. We are following Nanwalek IRA Council protocol and asking all visitors to Nanwalek School (and all staff members who travel) to Covid test before coming. We are here to support your family the best that we can. Please let us know if your child is sick so we can work with you. We've beat it before and I know we can beat it again.
