Bradley Broadcast September 2018
"One and Only You"
Dates to Remember
Counselor's Corner
Hello Amazing Parents!
This year has kicked off to such an amazing start here at Bradley, and the Bears are doing amazingly well! Our student climate has been full of warmth, love, and kindness across all grade levels. It was fantastic meeting all classes in every grade level with my "Counselor Toolkit" lesson. We want to make sure that all of our Bradley Bears are making positive goals to be successful with their friends and teachers.
This month our character focus is "RESPECT". We want to make sure that all of our Bradley bears understand three important Bradley Bear Essentials:
- We respect ourselves.
- We respect others.
- We respect our surroundings.
Our Bradley staff plans to help your child this month with frequent reminders, games, and activities to build his/her respect and help them to become more successful at everything they do. Please be sure to speak to your child about this trait and how it can also help him/her in the community.
September is also Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Library
Welcome to the Bradley Library!
My name is Ms. Rock. I’m excited to work with all of our Bradley Bear students, families, and staff this 2018- 2019 school year!
To begin the year, students will check out books during their class’ CAMP Computer time. Students will check out during Computer CAMP time only Monday through Thursday. Other activities will be planned for FUN Friday!
Each student will be given a large baggie (2 or 2.5 gallon) that must be used to transport books back and forth to school. My hope is that Bradley’s books will have additional protection from water and other damage when stored in these labeled baggies! Also, please discuss book care rules/guidelines with your Bradley Bear at home.

Volunteers are always necessary for successful special events like our Book Fairs and Storybook Pumpkin day. Please contact our amazing PTO for more information and volunteer opportunities!

P.E.
September arrived and PE has been busy learning about expectations and guidelines in our class. Keeping them active and teaching them the importance of making healthy choices everyday are part of our curriculum and our students are excited to learn more about it. As of August 27th we have started implementing our rule about PE shoes. We see our students 3 times a week. If you don't know which days your student has PE please check with your homeroom teacher. This month we also celebrate National Childhood Obesity Awareness and "Read for a Better Life;" therefore, we will have many fun activities and VIR (Very Important Readers) coming to our class. Bowling is also coming to PE this September! Looking forward to a spectacular and healthier school year!

In the Classroom
Pre-K
PreK Happenings:
In reading we are engaging in pre-reading activities (where is the picture, where are the words, words are made of letters, etc..), self-selecting books in the classroom library, understanding that text has meaning. We are also learning what our names look like.
In math we are counting objects, rote counting to 10, recognizing numbers 1-3, and the passing of time by tracking our daily schedule.
In social studies we are learning the rules of the classroom, how to work and clean in our centers, how to line up, how to sit at circle time, and about ourselves (All About Me.)
In science we are observing common characteristics of objects.
Kindergarten
Welcome to Kindergarten!!
We are so excited to hit the ground running in Kinderland! Our Kinder Cuties have learned so much in the few short weeks we’ve been in school and they will grow so much over the remaining months! Kindergarten is the year of growth in confidence, independence, and academics! We can’t wait to see all of the amazing achievements your child will make this year!
Some things we are focusing on in our classrooms right now are: letters, letter sounds, name recognition, name writing, number identification, and number writing. It is so important that you are working with your child at home on all of these things! If you don’t know how to help, please contact your child’s teacher for some ideas of how to support your child at home.
A few other things that will help set your child up for Kindergarten success is independence on the following things: unpacking their backpacks, walking to class, opening/closing lunch items, buttoning their clothes, and responding to their names quickly. Please help us out by practicing these things at home and while you are out in public to get your child accommodated with them so they are independent at school. Thanks so much for your help and support!
Cheers from Kinderland for a great 2018-2019 school year!
First grade
Bradley Bear First Graders have sure been busy this first month of school! We have been learning all about our fabulous new school and what it means to be a first grader.
In Reading, we are working on learning the characteristics of Fiction stories. Students are beginning to retell all parts of a story from the characters and setting to the problem and solution. Retelling a story is great to practice at home! Please spend time with your child reading everyday to help them grow as readers.
During Writer's Workshop, our first graders are learning about writing personal narratives. Students are thinking of small moments in their lives that they can share with others through writing!
In Math, first graders have been working on adding and subtracting. This is a skill we will be building on all year. The first part of the year we focus on addition and subtraction to 10 but by May they will be going up to 20! We will soon be digging into place value! Don't forget to practice counting to 120 as well as skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s!
During Science, we have been learning all about scientist and the great things they do! We have begun diving into properties of matter and how heating and cooling changes matter.
In Social Studies, students will begin learning about US Symbols from the bald eagle to the Liberty Bell. Students also discussed Citizenship and the United States and Texas Pledges. We will then be exploring maps and globes!
We are so thrilled for what lies ahead this school year! We look forward to watching your child grow! Happy Fall!
Sincerely,
First Grade Teachers
Second grade
2nd grade Bradley Bears are off to a great start! We are settling in to classroom procedures and getting to know one another. Here's a look at what is coming up this month! In reading, students will be exploring fiction and story elements such as the setting, characters, and sequencing events of the story. In writing, students are focusing on personal narratives - writing a "small moment" story. We are using base ten blocks in math to learn more about place value. Our students have LOVED visiting the Science Lab as we explore matter in Science. Ask your child about the science tools they explored! In social studies, we will learn about American symbols and patriotic celebrations.
third grade
Third grade is enjoying getting to know each other as we continue to practice our procedures so that we can focus on all the fun and learning for the year. This year we have so many exciting things for our bears to discover!
In math this month we will explore place value in a variety of ways and then dive into addition and subtraction. Students will explore different strategies to add and subtract including pictorial models, number lines, and equations. We will also review addition and subtraction fact fluency this month. In science we will examine different aspects of matter as we engage in several science explorations. Social studies will focus on learning about the positive impact first responders have on our communities, celebrate Freedom week, and study different parts of geography.
This month in reading we will be wrapping up our fiction unit by practicing essential reading skills including inferencing, sequencing and summarizing stories. After fiction we will be learning skills for reading the genre of expository, or non-fiction, text. The students will learn reading strategies for finding the main idea and details of the text that they read, as well as understand text features and the information they teach us. In writing we will continue our unit on personal narratives. The students will use strong leads and endings, and complete the writing process from drafting to publishing. In word study, we will be reviewing compound words, and words with VC and CV patterns.
Fourth grade
We are so excited to start this year with our new group of 4th graders. In fourth grade we hope to build independence and responsibility which will lead to future success for your child. September is a busy month for us. Math teachers will be focusing on place value and problem solving with addition and subtraction. In social studies students will be learning about different regions in Texas. During science we will focus on comparing and measuring properties of matter. Language arts teachers are working with students to improve their editing and revising skills along with creating personal narratives. They will focus on the fiction genre in reading. We are looking forward to a fabulous year!
