Habit 1: Be Proactive
We will be featuring a Family leader Opportunity around the 7 Habits in each edition of the Falcon Connection! Check our the full parent guide here).
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Habit #1: Be Proactive. Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. Proactive people recognize that they are “response-able.” They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. To help your student (and maybe other members of the family!) try out some of these activities!
1. The next time your student forgets homework or his or her soccer shoes before the big game, think hard before coming to the rescue. What are you teaching your student when you save the day?
2. If your student has a dispute with a teacher or gets a grade he or she thinks is unfair, encourage your teen to make an appointment with the teacher to discuss it one-on-one instead of doing it for him or her.
3. Make a pact with your teen to together stop an unhealthy habit. Identify the habit you want to stop (smoking, overeating, watching too much TV, not exercising, etc.) and choose a start date, an end date, and progress check-in dates along the way. Explain to your teen that research shows it takes a full 21-days to start a new habit or stop an old one, so it’s important not to get discouraged or give up too quickly.
4. Have a discussion with your teen about the things he or she would be willing to stand up and fight for in the face of peer pressure. Tell your child you don’t want him or her to tell you what he or she thinks you want to hear. You might try role-playing this so your child can be prepared to stand up to a friend or group if needed.
5. The amount of trust you have in a relationship is like a checking account at a bank. If you make lots of deposits, you develop high trust and a big account. If you make lots of withdrawals, you have a low balance. Share this idea with your teen and then think of things you can both do to increase your deposits with each other. Let your teen do most of the talking and really listen to his or her ideas. Have your child list what his or her own personal deposits and withdrawals might be. You can also make your own list of what you consider to be deposits and withdrawals for you.

Tie Tuesdays
To expand our Leadership engagement with staff and students here at Quail, we are starting Tie Tuesdays. To kick things off for January 2020, we would like to have all-male students wear a tie (neck or bow) to school beginning on Tuesday, January 7th. Please encourage your child to participate in this school-wide leadership effort!

2019 Holiday Cookie Extravaganza
Thank you to all of our Holiday Sponsors
We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to all of our amazing holiday sponsors who donated to our holiday drive!! We were able to help 40 families and over 100 kids from our community. Through your generosity we have helped families feel a little less overwhelmed during this time of year and made the holidays brighter! Thank you to all of our community members that helped to support this effort including a special thanks to The ReCyclery and Trips for Kids, and the Boys Soccer Team at South Meck for their support to assemble bicycles and perform safety checks! Thank you again so much for your support!
School-Based Services from Atrium Health
Outside Lunch Deliveries
Due to lunch time cafeteria logistics and the capacity of our Front Office Staff, we are unable to allow students to receive food deliveries from outside parties during the school day. Students may purchase their lunch from the cafeteria or bring lunch to school with them. We understand there are rare occasions where a student may forget their lunch or receive a special surprise – such as a birthday – and parents may bring lunch to school, labeled with the student’s first and last name as well as the teacher with whom the child attends lunch. Recently, we have had several challenges with delivery services bringing food to school without student names, with the wrong name, or at the wrong time. We cannot manage these systems. Thank you in advance for your support of these practices.
Note: If food deliveries are received, food will be kept in the front office to be picked up until 4:10. Food not picked up at dismissal will be disposed of at 4:30.
Student Incentive System: HERO
This year, we have begun using HERO to recognize positive student behavior. This online system captures data about what students are doing in a platform that students can view and that parents can view, too. Want to learn more about HERO? Click the link below to see the explanation. Parents can also log in to see their student's progress! Check out those directions below, too!
Lost and Found
Lunch Benefits: Free & Reduced Meals
Quail Hollow Middle School is no longer a CEP school and lunch is no longer provided for free. Families only need to submit one application for all students. Applications can be found at:
https://www.wearecms.com/apps/pages/applyforfreeorreducedmeals
Families have a 30 day grace period in to a new school year to complete meal applications but this period will come to a close on 10/8/19. Students that do not have an approved meal application for free or reduced price lunch will need to pay $2.75 beginning 10/8/19. Breakfast will continue to be served to all students, every school day, at no charge.
Pre-K, elementary and middle school students who do not have an approved application on file and do not have money in their account will receive a complete meal. The price of the meal will be charged to the student’s account. Students will be asked to return any extra items on their tray to the cashier. Parent/guardian is responsible for reimbursing the cafeteria for any money charged to the student’s account, even if an application is approved at a later date.
Parent/guardian is responsible for making sure their child has an approved application on file. If a letter detailing the status of the meal application is not received within 10 working days after the application is submitted, call (980) 343-6041 to inquire about the status of your application.

Here Comes the Bus App
Want to know where your student's bus is in real-time?! Download the Here Comes the Bus App and see where the bus is!
Here Comes the Bus is a school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving them real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts to help get them to the bus stop on time. Here Comes the Bus utilizes our GPS data and an easy to use customizable map that works on a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Signing up is EASY! On your desktop computer, you can sign up at https://herecomesthebus.com/getting-started/. You will need the district code (73877) and your student's ID number to sign up. For your smartphone or tablet, download the Here Comes the Bus app from the App Store or Google Play.
Once activated, you can customize or edit features, including how the app will communicate with you and the size of the notification radius around your bus stop.
Pro Tip: If you used the app last year, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app for all of the features to work!
