Coaches vs. Cancer Games

Saturday, January 20th at 6:15pm

For the full schedule of events, please see the Activities Updates section (below).

Many members of KCSD’s Digital Intelligence Task Force attended the Digital Literacy and Wellness conference back in November. This task force consists of law enforcement, community members, business partners, and educators.

Probably one of the most shocking slides we saw in all of the presentations was the amount of non-academic screen time children partake in each week. Combined, watching TV and playing video games AVERAGED 44 hours a week (compared to a jaw-dropping THREE HOURS combined alone with parents, which means parents doing something engaging with their kids that didn’t involve a screen). That’s more than a full time job! Advocacy groups and investors are asking tech giants Apple to make it easier to parent screen time by adding features to iPhones that enable parents to set up their children’s phones differently than they would be set up for an adult.

Whether your kids are new to screen time or have had screens in their hands for several years, it might be worth talking to them about how much time they are spending looking at a device or watching tv per day. For questions related to screen time to help you talk to your older kids about it, check out this blogpost from documentarian Dr. Delaney Ruston. Her blog, Tech Talk Tuesdays offers a new topic each week around technology that parents can use to discuss technology with their kids along with many other resources for parenting in the 21st Century.

Elementary Updates

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we did several activities to learn about this important figure in history. We read books, made a book, and did a writing activity. The kids were able to write what their “dream” for the world was. Here are some of their responses to the sentence starter “I have a dream…”

-that no one fights or hits.

-everyone plays nice.

-everyone shares and is kind.

-everyone gives high fives.

- that kids aren’t naughty.

-that no one argues

-everyone in the whole world is good.

Third grade students are using ice cream as a motivation to learn their multiplication facts! We have been having a great time and can't wait to celebrate all we have learned!

Second Chance Breakfast is now being offered during the passing periods before and after homeroom. Second Chance Breakfast gives students another opportunity to grab something to eat if they missed breakfast, or quickly grab and go with snacks for the morning. This is a brand new program for 2nd semester that we are piloting at KHS.
