September Parent Newsletter
2023-2024
From Behind the Desk of Principal Dr. James Horne
KHS families,
The school year is up and running. Thank you to all who attended our open house on 8/29. It was great to see and connect with so many of our families. I am starting a parent advisory group that will meet on October 24, 2023 from 5:00pm - 6:30pm. This is an opportunity to share your feedback on the high school as well as learn about improvement plans for this school year as well as being put into place for next year.
If you are interested in joining, please complete this form and I will send you the agenda for the meeting.
Words From Mr. Nathan Schroll
Hello KHS families!
Thanks to those who attended the open house. Here is our KHS Grading Practices Document 2023-2024 that was discussed for future reference. Our current conversion chart is in the document.
We want to invite you to become a parent observer in Canvas. This will allow you more access to what is happening in your student’s classes, and you can set up notifications to be emailed when activity occurs if you so choose. Please see the Parent Canvas Observation Setup Document to begin.
Please also know that this year we are again using the Student Responsibility Standard to gauge student development and use of “soft skills” that assist in their learning. This language for the standard is in the KHS Grading Practices Document, and it is a standard that will be averaged with the others during the course of a semester. This standard is graded every two weeks starting September 7th.
From Dean of Students Noe Escamilla
We are focused to keep all students and staff members safe and secure while at school.
Over the next several weeks we, along with schools across the District, will be practicing our plans for fire, sheltering in place, intruder (A.L.I.C.E.), and evacuating the bus in an emergency. These drills are held as practice and to teach students what to do in these scenarios. These drills are coordinated with our District Safety Team and required by the Illinois School Code. For questions or more information, please contact 630.365.5100

Everything should be filled out on physical exam but the list above is what will keep your student from being excluded.

15, 2023.
IMPORTANT- Future doctor’s appointments (on or after October 15th) will not exempt you from state exclusion. We do not accept State Sport’s Physicals. Please, do not turn them in to the health office those documents go the Athletic department.

IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE MEMO
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! Below are Attendance procedures and reminders for those that are new and those that need a refresher as we focus on the safety and security of our students.
Call the Attendance Line at (630)365-5100 option 3 to report an absence, late arrival, or early departure as soon as possible. Parents have 3 (Three) days to clear an “Unexcused” absence. After that it cannot be changed unless medical documentation is presented.
You may also use the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus. You will get a status notification when the request has been “Processed”. Daily attendance can also be checked there.
Students arriving late, whether “Excused” or “Unexcused”, must enter through Door 1 and sign into the building at the Front Office. The Student Entrance Door 31 locks at 7:35am.
Students leaving early must have a parent contact the school BEFORE they leave and they need to sign out at the Front Office.
If picking a student up early, the parent needs to come to the Front Office and show identification. If someone other than the parent or guardian is picking up the student, that individual’s name needs to be given and should be listed in Emergency Contacts in Infinite Campus. Identification will also be checked.
Kaneland High School is a closed campus and students are to remain here for their lunch period. Parents can drop off food but no deliveries from DoorDash, GrubHub, etc., will be accepted.
If a student is marked absent from a class they were actually present for, they are to talk to the class teacher. The teacher will let the office know if a mistake was made and the attendance should be changed.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Kaneland High School a safe and secure learning environment for our students.
The 2023 - 2024 Kaneland Student Handbook is located on our district homepage. For your convenience, it has also been linked here.
We look forward to working with you and your student(s) during this school year.
