Introduction

Cancer is a disease that consists of more than 100 different types of cancer. Cancer is a horrible and is becoming more and more common in the world. There are many charities that are working to put an end to cancer, but The American Cancer Society (ACS) is most effective when it comes to accomplishing its goals. The American Cancer Society is all for putting an end to cancer which is affecting people every day. The American Cancer society started in 1913 and became this amazing charity that is saving people every day. ACS is all over the country helping people in need. ACS is successful when it comes to putting an end to cancer one step at a time.

Mission Statement

“For over 100 years the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, we help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against Cancer.”

What is the cause/ issue your charity supports?

The American Cancer Society is an amazing organization, they fully support in putting an end to Cancer once and for all. The American Cancer Society helps people find cures, get well, and fight back against cancer (Information and Resources for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Skin).Cancer is an overall terrible thing, it is cells that grow out of control in your body. Cancer is not just one disease it is many diseases all together. The American Cancer Society wants to put an end to this horrible disease because Cancer is a worldwide problem and anyone around you can be affected with this disease. There are 14.1 million new cases cancers that have occurred globally, and more than one million people in the United States get Cancer each year. These people that are getting affected by Cancer are ordinary people, anyone in this world can be affected by this terrible disease(Information and Resources for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Skin).

Cancer is not just affecting the people in the United States it is harming millions of people all around the world. It is terrible how widespread this problem. Just in the United States 1.2 million Americans suffer from Cancer, and 500,000 of them are expected to die(Newton, David 147). When you think of it that is one in every four people. If Cancer is not addressed, it will make many people die each year which is horrible. There are many medicines now that can save people’s lives but if they don’t take these medicines, the Cancer will get worse and will soon lead to death(Cancers off Switch). Overall, The American Cancer Society is supporting the issue of putting an end to Cancer, so in the end people won’t have to worry about this terrible disease.

How did the organization begin and grow into what it is now?

The American Cancer Society wasn’t just founded by one person, it was founded by many, ten doctors, and five lay people. This organization was founded in New York City in 1913, so it was founded about 100 years ago. Cancer has been alive longer than this organization but this organization was founded for many reasons. One reason why it was founded was to raise awareness about Cancer. Another reason it was founded was because they wanted to put an end to cancer. They now raise money and have a program where people are working on to end cancer. Seeing people suffer from this disease is Terrible, so they want to put an end to this, so innocent people of this disease don’t have to suffer(Information and Resources for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Skin).

The American Cancer Society’s original purpose was to just raise awareness about cancer by writing articles about how bad cancer is and how people should be more aware of this disease because it is getting more common. The American Cancer Society wrote and published these articles in newspapers and magazines that people would see and read. By doing this the American Cancer Society was able to raise awareness about this disease. The purpose of the American Cancer Society has not changed because they still are getting people aware about cancer and still trying to put an end to cancer so people don’t have to suffer(Information and Resources for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Skin).

What does your chosen charity do for the community?

The American Cancer Society’s mission statement is, “For over 100 years the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, we help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against Cancer.” The American Cancer Society is helping all the people they can, in the United States and in the Community. The organization is helping all the people it can to cure them from Cancer. The American Cancer Society is located all around the United States because Cancer can be found anywhere in the United States, and people are in need of someone to save them.

The American Cancer Society needs money to help stop Cancer, so they host many fundraisers to raise money to search for a cure. They also have many projects they work on, they have relays, walks and runs. For these relays walks and runs you get sponsors and they will give you a certain amount of money for running a certain amount. Lastly The American Cancer Society has online events to get people to donate money. The American Cancer Society doesn’t raise all this money alone, they have volunteers. The volunteers help to honor survivors, and depending on your talents they give people special jobs to join the fight against cancer!

How effective is your charity at accomplishing its goals?

The American Cancer Society is viewed very highly by the community, this is because the charity is very good at accomplishing its goals. The charity also uses their money wisely and doesn't spend their money on their Ceo. This charity is funded by donations from various people around America who make donations monthly to the charity. The ACS also sells products such as, wigs and scarves to make money for their fundraisers (Information and Resources for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Skin). The organization only sells products that have to do with cancer like how a scarf would be useful to hide scars from throat cancer.

The charity spends more than half of the money they get to help find a cure for cancer (Charity Navigator - American Cancer Society). Other than that about thirty percent of the money the charity makes goes to fundraising, a way to make money, raise awareness for cancer, and get ASC to be a household name across the nation (Charity Navigator - American Cancer Society). There are many ways to show that ACS is affecting cancer. Such as, ACS has been doing much more than just giving money to cancer research they have worked hard to make sure that people with cancer always have a smile on their face they give their patients that are able to drive cars, cars. The charity holds walks and runs to stop cancer to get the whole community involved with putting an end to cancer.
