First Grade News
Mrs. Work/Mrs. Baker, Room 22
Highlights from Week 29: March 28-31
We had an eventful week getting to know each other and settling in to the last two and a half months of school. It was a good time for Mrs. Baker and I to make the change in teachers with Spring Break acting as a natural buffer for adapting to Mrs. Work. We agreed that Sophia K. would get all 5 days to be Top Dog so she is continuing through Monday and then will pass on the privilege.
We had fun creating spring artwork for our big hallway bulletin board which I noticed was empty on my first day last week! I hope you'll have a chance to admire it during your conference visit this week. Most have you have now signed up for a conference, but if you haven't, please try to make time on Thursday or Friday.
Writing lessons this week focused on facts and opinions.
Reading groups are moving ahead with a lively and regular pace which is impressive. The weekly progress the students achieve is remarkable. The reading you also do at home with your child is definitely a factor in their weekly growth.
We are excited about our spring science unit on insects. We received Painted Lady butterfly larva and are doing formal observations with magnifying glasses on Monday. We look forward to watching them grow, form their chrysalis, and emerge as butterflies. Other insects will join our classroom collection in the next several days. We had fun learning this past week what an insect is. You can see from the pictures below we were busy writing about it and drawing examples of insects in our journal.
In math we are finishing our chapter on Measurement and will have a few more homework assignments this week on telling time. We are testing this week on Chapter 9 Measurement, and are working hard on fluency and memorization with our addition and subtraction facts.
As always check out our classroom updates below.
Spring Conferences Will Be Student-Led
Conferences this year will be student-led on April 7th and 8th. As you sign up for a time, please make sure it's a time when you and your child can attend. This will be a great time to see their academic growth and to meet me.
Please remember that teachers are very busy and these days are set aside for us to meet with you. Please do your best to attend on those days only, thanks.

First, I want to say thank you to everyone who has given so generously to help support the Oak Creek PTA with their biggest fundraiser of the year. We very much appreciate your support!
If anyone else is interested, there is still time to donate an arts/crafts item! We are grateful for items big and small. Our basket is really shaping up but we are short the following items:
- pipe cleaner
- craft kits
Understanding that there is rarely enough time in the day, if it's easier to give a cash donation, I'm happy to do the shopping for you. If a cash donation works better for you, please drop an envelope (labelled “spring fundraiser” and with my or Julie’s name on it) off with Mrs. Work. When the purchase has been made, I'll provide you with an itemized receipt.
Because we need to take photos, organize items, and write descriptions of each basket in advance of the silent auction, all items must be in hand by April 11. Kindly drop any items off in the classroom and someone will collect them regularly.
Thank you in advance for considering donating to Oak Creek's Spring Fundraiser!
If you have any questions, please email, call or text me at 669 900 3721
