The Wonderful World of Woodbury

And Now, A Word From Our Principal...
Spring is upon us, and we are hoping that many of our students return to good health. Winter sickness has hit our little school hard and we have seen a significant increase in student absence. Please continue to encourage your student(s) to practice good hand washing habits and to keep hands out of their mouth. Another good wash of coats, backpacks, and lunch-bags also couldn't hurt.
District policy allows for 7 unexcused absences so we encourage you to acquire and submit doctor's notes any time your student(s) has been seen by a physician. This helps us better track excused and unexcused absences, provides more details of individual student absence when we review our records each month, and informs us of any supports we might be able to offer our families. Reminders regarding attendance will be sent home in the coming week to parents/guardians so that our families have up to date information on their child's absences. If you ever struggling to get your child to school, please do not hesitate to reach out to us for advice or support.
Spring also brings us the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. Third grade students participate in this state assessment during March and April. These tests assess the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics and help us identify how much students are learning, how our school is performing, and how groups of students (in districts, states, etc.) compare to each other. This is simply one snapshot of student achievement and each group of students in third grade can vary from year to year. Our teachers have been working hard on preparing the students for the upcoming tests and providing them with the support and encouragement to simply "show what they know." Please simply do as you always do on regular school days - aim for a good night's sleep for your child, eat healthy breakfast, and provide words of encouragement toward best effort. Your continued support is appreciated!
Here's to a happy and healthy spring ahead!
With Kindness,
Mrs. Kern
Parking & Safety
We are asking for your help with the following:
- Please drop your student off in a safe designated area. Please avoid dropping off your student in intersections or other places that present a hazard.
- Please be patient at drop off and pick up and avoid double parking in the designated area.
- Please drop off your student on the playground at 7:45 when we have appropriate supervision for safety.
- Please keep extra eyes out for walkers and come to a complete stop at stop signs.
- Please be respectful and courteous to neighbors and their yards. We know that street parking is a must, but neighbors also would like to preserve the easement area and grass as they take great pride in their homes.
Thank you so much for your help! We appreciate your help in keeping our students and families safe!
Grandparent's Day Update
What's New...
Students Go GAGA for GAGA Ball!
The game has potential to get very competitive, but is great exercise and utilizes strategy to be the last one standing. We encourage you to help us reinforce the following: encourage all in the pit, be a good sport and don't showboat or try to be the referee, when you're out bow out with grace - we promise it's just a game and you will soon have another turn, be safe and conscious of those around you, be kind, and have fun!
Here is a sample of how the game is played.
City of Sandwich Approves Truancy Ordinance
We all know optimal learning takes place when students attend school on a regular basis. When students are not in school on a regular basis and the absences are unexcused, the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education intervenes. To assist with their intervention, the City of Sandwich has approved a truancy ordinance reinforcing the importance of students attending school on a daily basis. Poison Prevention Tips:
• Make sure all potential poisons are out of the sight and reach of children
• Keep medicines and household products in their original containers with original labels
• Always read labels before using medicines, cleaners and other products

• Never call medicine candy or make a game out of taking it
2020 U.S. Census Information
The U.S. Census event will take place this spring. The census is a count of all people living in the United States and takes place every 10 years. For the first time, one can respond online and will receive a unique identifying number in the mail. The online feature begin this month.
The census is important because it helps decide how much federal money our schools will receive over the next 10 years, and how much money our state will receive for parks, neighborhood improvements, public health, transportation, and many other programs and services.
