A Message From Mrs. Renton
I'll begin as I've started most communications to you during the last six weeks! Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we have been adjusting, like you, to the drastic changes in life during recent weeks. I am extremely appreciative of our students, parents, teachers, and staff for their flexibility and resilience during this challenge.
The following information will provide answers to commonly asked questions:
- The final day for distance learning lessons, and food distribution will be Friday, May 22.
- Kindergarten Kickoff (formerly Roundup), has been rescheduled for Tuesday, August 4.
Additionally, plans are underway for students to pick up their items from school and return any items (laptops and library books) to school the week of May 25th. Students and families will remain in their cars during this process which will allow our Staff to maintain social distancing while following additional precautionary measures. More specific details will be coming soon regarding this process.
See the chart below and mark your calendars to come to school on the day/time that aligns with your student's last name. Thursday, May 28th, after 2pm and all day on Friday, May 29th, are reserved for families to pick up items from school, should you not be able to make it during your assigned time earlier in the week.

Welcome To Mrs. Bishop, Hawthorn Assistant Principal
Taking Dr. Todtfeld's place is Mrs. Bishop, who is coming to us from North Kansas City School District. She will serve as assistant principal at both Hawthorn and Graden. She began her career as a kindergarten teacher, and she currently serves as a teaching and learning coach in the NKC Schools. She coaches colleagues in student-centered instruction, and she leads professional development. She earned recognition through her demonstration writing workshop for both teachers and district leaders, she has written curriculum, and she represented her district in a leadership coaching academy.
Mrs. Bishop, who is a Park Hill School District alumna, received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, and she received her master's degree in school administration from Northwest Missouri State University. She is currently working toward her doctoral degree in teaching and learning, with an emphasis in adult learning. Please help me welcome Mrs. Bishop! I am excited for her to meet our amazing Hawthorn community!!
Another Reading Opportunity With Mrs. Reynolds
Beginning next week, Mrs. Reynolds will be reading The One and Only Ivan each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:00 on the Hawthorn Media Center Facebook page. The videos will also be archived on the Hawthorn website under Media Center. After listening to the book, she hopes you will join her this fall to watch the movie together!

Distance Learning Resources for Parents
The Instructional Coaches in Park Hill created this wonderful resource for parents. This is not intended to be a set of extra lesson plans or anything that is required. It is simply a collection of resources that you can use to help keep your children engaged while they are learning from home.

4th Quarter Grading Guidelines
Fourth Quarter Report Cards will look different based on the COVID 19 school closure.
Here are a few beliefs as we work through this grading process:
- Teachers will report on standards when appropriate to honor the student’s work and provide feedback.
- Distance learning, lack of access to technology, and other barriers to learning should not be reasons for an elementary student's grade to lower in a standard.
- Students should always be extended the benefit of the doubt and given latitude to show evidence of learning and work completion.
- Teachers have permission to provide feedback with flexibility and reasonableness.
As you might have seen in a message from the district, we will be flexible and give grace as we prepare students’ report cards.
While we will give you as much feedback as we can on how your child is doing on the learning standards, we will be reasonable with your child and with ourselves, knowing that this is a difficult time for everyone. We will use what evidence we can find to show how well your child has learned.
In the past, we used only these grades:
· Exceeded (E)
· Mastered (M)
· Partially understood (P)
· Needed support (N)
For this report card, we will add three more reporting options:
- Distance learning completion (DL)
- Unknown completion (UC)
- Not applicable (NA)
Summer School Updates
- Summer School will be July 1-31, no school on July 3
- Hawthorn students will attend at UNION CHAPEL due to scheduled updates to our building. (Our building is scheduled for a new roof and updates to the HVAC system. This work was scheduled months ago, prior to the current health crisis.)
- We will have an online enrollment form this year. As soon as we have access to this, we will share it with you.
- Summer School hours will be 8:30 am- 3:30 pm
- We are developing a virtual summer school plan in case face-to-face is not an option due to health and safety guidelines. Virtual summer school would be offered July 1-July 31.
- Transportation will be available as long as we can meet health and safety guidelines.

Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
