SPANISH SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
Week of August 9 - August 13
From the Desk of Principal Tammy Hart
Dear Spanish Springs HS Parents and Guardians,
On behalf of the staff at Spanish Springs High School, I would like to welcome all new and returning students to the 2021-2022 school year. As we plan for a new beginning with having all students return to full in-person learning in the building, our focus will still be to ensure that students are connected and provided quality instruction. Last school year was challenging for students and staff adjusting to the varied learning models. There was a lot learned through this process; however, I so appreciate the efforts of the students, staff and parents who perservered through these challenging times due to Covid-19. Despite the challenging time like we have never experienced before, we are excited about the opportunity of teaching and working with your child for the upcoming school year.
Sincerely,
Tammy Hart, Principal

Class Schedules
Attention and focus were given to ensure classroom structures were equitable in sizes across content areas. It becomes quite challenging having to move students or adjust their schedules without causing imbalances and inequalities.
During the first two weeks of school, counselors will only be seeing students who have a gap in their schedules, i.e., no class assigned or have “See Counselor” on their schedule. Counselors will also be assisting with new enrollees to Spanish Springs HS during the first two weeks of school. Students are to report to their class that is on their schedule. For all other issues, students are encouraged to email their counselors with their requests for any changes in their schedules. Class changes will not be granted during the first two weeks of school.
The Counseling Department presented an 8th grade Parent Night last spring to inform incoming freshman parents and students with important information about starting high school. If you were unable to attend, click on this Link: https://youtu.be/BFz6feQjJZo

Registration
Students’ class schedules will be available on Infinite Campus. We would like to encourage students to view and print them out for the first day of school. Students will be on a “C” schedule on the first day of school. The “C-Day” schedule means that they will be attending every class period on August 9th (zero, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Once students begin classes, teachers will inform students what school supplies are needed for their classes. The subsequent days, students will follow our traditional A-Day, B-Day, rotating block schedule.
Transportation
- You can then click on the “E-Link” for bus schedules and/or the “Find Your Zoned School” link to find out what school zone you are in.
Parents are encouraged to contact the district transportation dispatch at (775) 337- 7769 for questions pertaining to their child/children’s bus transportation needs.
Student Drop Off Procedure
Parents and Guardians: As we continue to improve our safety protocols at SSHS, we ask for your help when dropping off your students. The parent drop-off location is not located at the Main Entrance roundabout. We ask that you follow the signs toward the Parent Drop-off Zone on the north side of the building, near the cafeteria. All drop offs should occur in this roundabout which offers an easy, safe exit to Eagle Canyon Drive. Please do not stop/park at the front entrance of the school to drop off your students between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. This creates traffic issues and significant safety concerns. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe while on campus.
School Pictures!
School pictures are scheduled for: Monday, September 13th and Tuesday September 14th. All students will have their portraits taken during their English classes.
Order forms will be be distributed during English classes later this month.
Makeup Pictures are tentatively scheduled for Monday, October 26th .
All students, including seniors, need to have their pictures taken for administrative purposes like student IDs and Infinite Campus.
I would also like to have an announcement about senior portraits. It can be the same one that we sent out at the end of the school year--we did that, right? let me know if we didn't and I will get that info to you. Senior portraits must be taken by January 15th in order to be included in the yearbook.
Senior Pictures
Senior portraits must be taken by January 15th in order to be included in the yearbook. More information will be forthcoming in future newsletters.
Attendance Policy
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Spanish Springs HS follows all WCSD Attendance Policies and Procedures.
In Summary:
If your student(s) is sick, please keep your student(s) home from school.
Parent/guardian must call or email the school each day their student(s) is
absent to verify the student’s absence on that day to ensure the child's
safety. Please call the SSHS Office at 425-7733 to verify student absences.
Students who miss 10% or more of the total number of class periods for any reason during a semester (high school) for each course will be chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism rules are set by State and Federal guidelines.
Students will not be retained or fail a course (high school) based on attendance. However, students who miss 10% or more of class periods for any course that meets in a semester will be chronically absent in that course(s).
If the student must miss an entire class period for any reason, it is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to see that a written/verbal verification is provided to the school prior to, during, or within three days of an absence. Failure to do so within three days of the student's return to school will result in the absence being coded as Unverified (AUK).
The Health Department Excluded Distance Learning OR Contact Tracing (HDED or HDCT) code is used when a school has been notified by Washoe County Health Department or Washoe County School District that a student is excluded from school but is able to work on Temporary Distance Learning for the length of the exclusion. Students are to attend Temporary Distance Learning daily and complete work assigned. Students will check-in daily on MS Teams through the Daily Agenda. If a student is unable to work due to health reasons or the student chooses not to work or communicate with the teacher daily, the student will be marked HDE. The HDED and HDCT codes do not count toward chronic absenteeism. HDE does count toward chronic absenteeism.
Street Passes
· The office will need a note from a parent/guardian requesting a street pass for their child.
· The note must state the reason and time the student needs to leave school.
· If a parent walks in or calls without prior notification, please be prepared to wait 10 to 15 minutes or longer for the student to be retrieved from his or her class.
Off Campus Guidelines
· Any student scheduled to have an Off-Campus class MUST have an Off-Campus sticker on the back of their Spanish Springs High School Identification Card.
· The Off-Campus stickers are available in the Counseling Office.
· Students are required to leave school as soon as their class is over. They may not stay for nutrition break or lunch break.
· Students should not return to school. If you have an activity after school, you must remain off school grounds until the last bell has rung.
· The expectation is that students leave campus for their off-campus period and do not return during school hours. If there is a reason a student must stay on campus during their off-campus period, then the student must sign in at the Library or the Career Center. All campus expectations apply including cumulative tardies, the use of hall passes, and not lingering in the hallways during class time.
· If you have morning off-campus, you should not come to school until the end of the period. If for some reason you have to arrive early, you must check into the Student Relations Office and sign in. You will then remain in the Library or Career Center until passing time.
· Having an Off-Campus is a privilege and failure to comply with the rules will result in a class being added to your schedule, and the Off-Campus privileges taken away.
Make-Up Work
Make-up work must be provided for any absence, but it is the student’s responsibility to request the make-up work in advance or on the first day s/he returns to class. Because it is impossible to make-up some in-class assignments, coursework of a similar nature may be given. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in all make-up class work at the designated deadline. Failure to complete the make-up work within the designated deadline will result in no credit received for the make-up work.
Students will have the number of days absent plus one to complete missed make up work or concepts missed beginning on the day the teacher provides the missed assignments to the student. Teachers must provide missed make-up work or concepts missed within two days of the student’s return to class.
DMV Certification of Attendance
· DMV Certifications of Attendance are processed at the district level by the Student Records Department.
· Visit the WCSD web page: www.washoeschools.net and select:
STUDENT AND PARENTS
>STUDENT RECORDS
> CLICK ON BACKPACK CURRENT STUDENT.
FILL OUT INFORMATION, AND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE CHECK THE DMV BOX.
· Please allow one week of processing time.
· Please note: Students who miss 10% or more of the total number of class periods for any reason during a semester (high school) for each course will be chronically absent and do not meet the DMV Certification of Attendance requirements. Chronic absenteeism rules are set by State and Federal guidelines.
