Write an Argumentative Term Paper
How to Write an Argumentative Term Paper
Students in high school and college dread term papers and even more so when those term papers require an argumentative style of writing.
Argumentative term papers require a term paper writer to take a stance on a debatable issue and use solid facts and figures or strong opinions to sway the reader to his side of the argument. However despite the complexity of writing such a term paper, the format of the paper is quite simple and can be easily followed by the reader. The key concept of an argumentative research or term paper is to pick a topic and argue in its favor or not.
Step 1: the first step, as always is to pick a topic under debate. A controversial topic has more scope in the paper, because the intensity of the debate means there is more supporting and unsupporting research material available online. However a purely theoretical topic is not a good choice because your term paper needs to have some subjective elements to it as well. For example, if a student writes a term paper that is of pure statistics, it does not give much room to the term paper writer to give verbal arguments.
Step 2: The next step is to find resources for your term paper. The first thing to do is to ask your professors what are the best sources of references for your topic and if he can impart some valuable knowledge on the subject. Explore the college library to see any books written by renowned authors in the field. Some online resources can also give you great results like Proquest, JSTOR and other such online dissertation help services.
Step 3: Read the gathered research and note down the key elements of your topic. Take down convincing statements and statistics from other research reports done by other authors and write the significant of their impacts.
Step 4: The thesis statement is next in line and is the most important sentence of your entire term paper or research paper. In essence a thesis statement gives the purpose of the term paper and discusses the main concept of writing the research paper. If your topic has sub-elements involved in it, which will be addresses individually, a student needs to include those in the thesis statement as well.
Step 5: After creating a thesis statement, make an outline of the research paper. The outline will contain the main sections and headings of the term papers in bulleted form. The outline will include each main concept of the research as a heading and will list the headings of its supporting evidences as sub-headings. The best format to create an outline is the APA format style including roman numerals for the main point, Arabic numerals for main facts and capital letters for sub-point.
Step 6: Create a paragraph to justify each argument. In the introduction write a few sentences related to the background information of the topic. The main section will contain the different stances of argument and their justification in multiple paragraphs. The conclusion will restate the thesis statement, summarize the findings and give its impacts and provide food for thought for further investigation on the topic.
Step 7: The last section is the bibliography and the reference list which include the name of the author, the title of the publication, and the year it was published.
