PG.-6 Different Configurations!!!

Electron Configuration

Electron configuration is the distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule in atoms or molecular orbitals.

Steps to Write Electron Configuration

  1. Find the amount of electrons in an atom.
  2. Determine the principle energy level of the atom.
  3. Determine the number of sublevels.
  4. Assign the electrons to the sublevels following the 3 rules.
  5. Write the complete electron configuration.
EX: Carbon= 6e- 1s2 2s2 2p2

Orbital Notation

  1. Start with the lowest energy level and move on to the highest.
  2. If you add electrons in it can change the energy of the orbital.
  3. If there was a choice between having full orbitals and half filled orbitals, then it would be full orbitals because half filled orbitals have a lower energy level than full orbitals.
