Mrs. Mogg's Monday Memo
Aug. 14
Daily Language papers
Handwriting....
Some of these students are not making their letters correctly, are not using spacing between words, or are putting capitals in the middle of words. Student printing should be very legible by 2nd grade. Please reinforce this by using the papers that were given to you.
This is a skill that takes individual attention... and it's really difficult for one teacher to do much of that.
This week's specials.....

Tuesday - Art
Wednesday - Music
Thursday - GYM .... AR Quizzes on library books need to be taken by today!

AR Points!
We have library every 4 days. My expectation is that each child choose 2 books on his/her level and PASS the quiz on those books before the next library day. This is really important to developing reading comprehension.
We don't have much time to take quizzes in the mornings before library, so I prefer the quizzes are taken within 3 days. When students accomplish that goal, they are rewarded with a quarter.
ROCKET MATH is TAKING OFF!
Keep practicing those addition facts!
The GOAL is to be done with addition (level Z) by Christmas break.
Behavior Chart .... Tally marks
Old teacher note: As time has passed, our society has become more casual. Nothing wrong with that, except that the lines are blurry for our kids about what behavior is appropriate in different situations. I've had to say, "We are not at a football game," a few times this year. Please help your child understand that there are different expectations in different settings. Thanks.
ANYWAY.... if your child received 2 or more tallies this week, I'm sending you a copy of his/her page. You will then have the opportunity to discuss this with your child, and your child will have the opportunity to adapt the behavior before the end of the month.
Reading
The skills we are developing are identifying subjects in sentences (you should hear a song this week), recognizing long vowels, identifying words in the -AME family (Try making a list at home!). We will also work on finding the main idea and details in all that we read.
COMPUTER LAB
These tests show us the levels at which your student is currently performing. Students will regularly take these tests to show progress throughout the year.
Also in the computer lab this year, we will be using the same school-wide program this year that teaches students about the computer and keyboarding skills. We will do that weekly.
Some of the programs we have available have changed, so I don't have a list for you to use at home yet. Your child can get on Brainpop, Jr. at home. Log in is plainfieldcn and password is Central. This has a lot of short videos and games on topics that we study here.
Math
We will finish Topic 1 on Addition and subtraction strategies this week. The Topic one test will be Tuesday of next week, Aug. 22. I'm sending home a review packet that you may choose to work on over the next week to help your child prepare for the upcoming test. You do not need to return it to school. It is for the benefit of your child only.
I am trying to find time in the day to help children make corrections. I'm not able to get to everyone.... if your child has corrections to do on a math paper that comes home, please help him/her do them so he/she can learn from them.
Thanks.
