Eagles' Nest
Family edition - November 2019
Principal's Message
It's already November! It's hard to believe we are already several weeks into the 2nd quarter and Thanksgiving is right around the corner!
We've had great learning going on at Washington! Teachers have been working hard at creating engaging and relevant activities for our students. I hope you've had the opportunity to check out some of those things on Facebook and Instagram!
As a parent, you may be exploring how to keep your child safe online while giving them some leeway to navigate social media responsibly. Apps like Bark are available to help parents do just that. Additionally, Mehlville is sponsoring a speaker for parents to help provide support in this unprecedented age of online connectivity. Check out the flyer below, and we hope you can make it!
As we enter the Thanksgiving season, I want to say how thankful I am to be part of such a wonderful and supportive school community. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and we are fortunate to have such great partners in our families in order to shape the future of our next generation of adults.

From Nurse Angie
It is the beginning of the Seasonal Flu time. I wanted to share the following
information from the Saint Louis County Health Department.
Signs and Symptoms of the seasonal flu:
Fever
Cough
Sore Throat
Body Aches
Headache
Chills
Tiredness/Fatigue
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
If you have any of the above symptoms – especially a fever of 100° F or higher – contact your
medical provider for evaluation.
General Precautions to Stay Healthy (and Keep Others
Healthy)
Whether or not you get a seasonal flu shot, here are some simple things YOU can do to keep
from catching or spreading a “bug” - whether it’s a “flu bug” or the common cold:
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after you cough, sneeze, or blow
your nose.
Whenever you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth. If possible, use a tissue; throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it. If a tissue is not available, cough into your sleeve rather
than your hand.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth as much as possible.
Maintain a distance of three (3) feet between you and other people.
Avoid people who have a cold, and, if you catch a cold, avoid contact with other people.
If you are sick (or think you may be sick) stay home from work or school.
If possible, talk to healthcare providers by phone to avoid an in-person office visit.
Check with your physician about getting the pneumococcal vaccination. It protects you from
many types of pneumonia – one of the most common and fatal complications of the flu,
especially for older adults.
If your child has strep throat or another bacterial infection, he / she should stay
home until the antibiotic has been given for at least 24 hours and your health care
provider has given your child permission to return to school. I encourage you to
seek medical attention when your child is sick and to follow your health care
providers’s recommendations about returning to school and other activites.

Mehlville Listens: How should we support our teachers?
We are asking for parents help to renew our Mehlville School District strategic plan. We need your feedback to set goals and priorities for the next iteration of our strategic plan. To participate, please answer the following question through our ThoughtExchange. What support do our teachers need to prepare our students to be productive and successful citizens?
Share your thoughts now: http://bit.ly/TE2msdr9
This is the second in a series of exchanges scheduled for the 2019-2020 school year. Each exchange is based on one of the three main sections of our current strategic plan: student preparation, teacher support, and an effective and efficient school district.
We're also hosting a series of Mehlville Listens meetings, and we encourage you to attend as we explore the ThoughtExchange responses. The next Mehlville Listens meeting is Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Buerkle Middle School from 6:30-8 p.m.
You can learn more about the process and view results of the first ThoughtExchange about student preparation on the Mehlville Listens section of our website: https://mehlvilleschooldistrict.com/mehlvillelistens
