Rashkis Media Center
What's Been Roaring at the Library!
2016-2017 At A Glance
We had an amazing year here in the media center! Our more than 500 students and 100 staff members checked out over 22,300 materials from the library! Furthermore, through media center funds, donations, and the annual Scholastic Book Fair, we obtained 362 new books & 5 new iPads! Check out some more stats below:
- The most popular section of the library was the Nonfiction section - almost 1/3 of all books checked out this year were Nonfiction. The most popular Nonfiction section was the 500's where Science and Math books on topics such as Weather, Dinosaurs, Habitats, and Animals reside.
- Our second most popular section of the library was Fiction, including our Popular Series section. Fiction comprised 30% of our total circulation. Our most popular book series was Diary of a Wimpy Kid followed by Big Nate.
- 17.8% of circulated books were picture books in the Everybody section. The most popular Everybody book was Ninjago - Way of the Ninja by Tracy West.
- 11% of circulation were graphic novels. The Sisters series were our most popular graphic novels followed by the Bone series.
Book Madness
The library held numerous promotions, events, and contests including Book Madness this past spring. Each day, books went head to head and students voted on their favorite until a Champion was crowned. This year's winner...Harry Potter and The Cursed Child by J.K Rowling!
Book Character Election
In honor of our national elections, we held a Book Character Election at Rashkis where some of our favorite book characters ran for President and Vice-President. Hermione Granger & Harry Potter edged out Elephant & Piggie for the win!
Author Visits
We were so fortunate to have multiple authors visit Rashkis this year including best-selling author Jeffrey Brown, author & scientist Jessica Garrett, and local author and book reviewer Susie Wilde. What a treat for our students to see and talk to some of their favorite authors face-to-face!
Reading, Research, and More!
In addition to maintaining the library, Mrs. Leggette taught more than 440 classes to students in Pre-K through 5th grade on lessons related to information literacy, research, Digital Citizenship, pleasurable reading, and classroom content. Highlights include holiday readings with Pre-K, Author Introductions with Kindergarten, NC Book Awards with 1st grade, Nonfiction in the Library with 2nd grade, Infographic Creation with 3rd grade, Book Tastings/Trailers with 4th grade, and Fake News with 5th grade. This year, Mrs. Leggette created a Library Crew with 6 amazing 5th grade helpers and had more than 10 outstanding parent volunteers that helped run the library while she was teaching. Furthermore, Mrs. Leggette also attended the annual NCTIES technology conference held in Raleigh. Lastly, in addition to the highlighted events above, the library arranged various promotional events including the annual Scholastic Book Fair, Reading BINGO, and various presentations from the Chapel Hill Public Library.
