MESSAGE FROM DR. CHURCH

Dear Totem Falls Families,

I’m sure many of you have heard about House Bill 1356, where the legislature passed a law regarding Native American names and mascots related to Washington State schools. In December 2021, the Snohomish School Board passed a Resolution asking that we begin to look at changing the images and names that may be construed as cultural appropriation. Today, the staff and I began to discuss the implications of changing the name of the school and mascot. I want you to know the community will be involved in the process of renaming the school and choosing a new mascot.

I want to acknowledge that this is difficult for me and may be for many of you as well. I love the connection to Totem Falls and have enjoyed getting to know Rocky. My hope is that all voices that are interested in being part of the process will have an opportunity to share their thoughts, especially our students. I have discussed having a formal process with the staff and community in the near future with Dr. Kultgen, and your involvement is important to him as well.

Once we determine what our next steps are, I will let you know. At the end of the day, any name and mascot change will need to be accepted by the school board. I am looking forward to the process and hope you are as well.

Sincerely,

Craig
