How Can Families Effectively Partner With and Support Teachers?
One of our main school goals is to create a good home-school partnership. The National Education Association offers these tips for Parents:
- Develop a relationship with your child’s teacher and keep in touch with him/her often.
- Ask the right questions.
- Set goals with your child and his/her teacher and foster the achievement of those goals.
- Review your child’s data to ensure he/she is on track.
- Look in your child’s backpack every day.
- Frequently view the parent portal. (MES uses PowerSchool. Contact Norma Newton at 812-654-1616 or norma.newton@milan.k12.in.us if you’ve forgotten your log-in information.)
- Actively participate at school when possible.

Registration for Kindergarten students for the 2018-19 school year has been set for Thursday, April 5, 2018. This registration day is for both the Traditional Kindergarten program for students who will be five years old on or before August 1, 2018 and for the optional, two-year Readiness Kindergarten program for students who will be four years old on or before August 1, 2018. All 2018 Kindergarten classes, Readiness and Traditional, will be full-day classes meeting every day Monday-Friday and students are eligible for all programs including lunch & book assistance.
Participation in the Readiness class is limited and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. The child must be toilet-trained in order to attend.
Parents are asked to call the school at 654-2922 to set up a registration appointment. Please be sure to bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization record with you that day. Also, during the registration process, you will need to provide the names and phone numbers of your child’s doctor and dentist in addition to the names and phone numbers of three people who could be contacted in case of an emergency. (These should be people other than the parents.) Children are not “fully” registered until these items are on file. A physical and dental exam are also required to be completed before school starts in August. The nurse will give you the necessary form at registration.

Parent Reminders:
« As Valentine’s Day approaches, please keep in mind that MES will not accept deliveries of balloons to students at school due to safety concerns as stated in the Student Handbook.
« Please continue to monitor your child’s lunch account by visiting the school webpage and clicking on the “EZ Pay” logo in the upper right corner to enter the meal payment program where you can find your child’s account balance.
« Winter is not over yet! To make sure you get the calls about delays or cancellations, always let the school know if your phone number changes.
« If there is a threat of severe weather, please do not call the school. As soon as the Superintendent makes a decision regarding school closing, you will be notified via the automated calling system. School staff will not have that information until the announcement is made. We appreciate your patience.
« If your child is late to school in the morning, please come into the office and sign them in. Our computerized sign-in system is self-service and takes only moments to operate. The door in the drop-off area at the side of the building locks promptly at 8:00 a.m.
« Please label all clothing, backpacks, lunchboxes, swim bags, etc. whenever possible so they can be promptly returned to the owner. Our Lost & Found is full!
« With the cold and flu season upon us we’d like to ask your help in keeping your child at home if he has a fever of 100° or higher until he is fever free, without medication for 24 hours. Also, your child should stay home if she has vomited in the past 24 hours. Thank you for your help in keeping our school healthy!
« If your child is absent please be sure to notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by either emailing the teacher or leaving a message on the school’s attendance call-in line (812-654-2922, option #4). You should inform one or the other; you do not have to notify both.
« If you have an afternoon bus change, your best bet is always to send a note to school with your child. If it's a last minute change and you must call the school, please do so as soon as possible (before 2:30 p.m.) so the message can be relayed to your child before he/she boards the bus. Finally, please keep in mind that emailing the teacher about a change may not be a good idea unless you are doing it at least a day before. Teachers are busy conducting the class and away from their desks most of the day; sometimes the teacher may be absent. Either situation could result in your child not getting the message.
