Kindness Week

Did you ever think about the difference between kind and nice?

Being kind is a choice. Think about it: We say "Be nice" to toddlers when they are learning to play with others or with toys. We even say "Be nice" to our pets. But when we say "Be kind" to someone, we mean something deeper. It takes real commitment to be kind in all situations - to show empathy and respect.

Great Kindness Challenge Week is a way that schools across the world have set aside time to focus on kindness. It will be January 27 through February 3. Each school celebrates kindness in its own way, but at Lakeview, we have the following activities planned. Many thanks to Ms. Wilke and student council for leading the work!

Coin War - save your coins to donate to help build a school in Mexico

Kindness hearts - each day, each student will write something he/she did that was kind for someone else or an act of kindness shown to them

Kindness Assembly and Announcements - to help everyone think about kindness

Spirit Days - Let's see everyone celebrate kindness with these dress-up days:

• Monday, Jan 27 - Kindness Rocks - Rock Star Day - dress like a rock star

• Tuesday, Jan 28 - Crazy for Kindness - Mismatched Clothes and/or Crazy Hair Day

• Wed, Jan 29 - Hats off to Kindness - Hat Day

• Thurs, Jan 30 - Team Up for Kindness - Wear sports apparel

• Mon, Feb 3 - Dream of Kindness - Pajama Day

McTeacher Night!

No need to make dinner plans for Thursday, January 23rd - we've got you covered! It is McTeacher night at McDonald's in South Milwaukee from 4:30-7:00 p.m. that evening. Would you like to see what it looks like when a teacher makes your ice cream cone? Or perhaps check our math and make sure you got 6 Chicken Nuggets? We'll be there, and our PTO receives funds when you join us for dinner. Click here for more information.

Literacy Night - RSVP due Jan 24

South Milwaukee's annual literacy night has become one of the biggest events of the entire school year. It is so big that it fills much of the high school! Please come and join us in a variety of activities that showcase literacy in its many forms. Many students will have writing pieces on display or will actually read their work. Dinner is also provided if you return this RSVP letter to school by Friday, January 24th.

5th grade DARE

5th grade students will start the DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) this week. On "Day 1" of specials, instead of library, our 5th grade classes will have 30 minutes of DARE with Officer Walusay. Students will still be able to check out books during their opposite library time.

Concert & Art Show Dates

Please be sure you have these two important dates on your family calendar:

Lakeview concert - Tuesday, March 17 at the high school, 6:30 p.m.

Lakeview art show - Wednesday, March 11 at Lakeview, 5-7 p.m.

Look for more information about both of these events in future newsletters.

Planetarium Night at UWM

CESA1 PAGE is sponsoring an evening at the UWM planetarium. The 3rd-5th session is full, but if you hurry, there are still some spots remaining in the 6th-8th grade session on February 13th. See this link for more details and a registration link.

Lions ROAR! Recognize a staff member at Lakeview

Is there a staff member at Lakeview that you would like to recognize? Our PTO has set up an easy way for you to recognize anyone at Lakeview that is making a difference for your child. That could be a teacher, paraprofessional aide, secretary, food service, or custodian. There are so many people working together for our students! We encourage you to let the PTO know so they can pass on your compliments! Here is the link to the survey. (You are welcome to submit more than one!)
