Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 17th

Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. This January 17, make the holiday more than just a day off and take time to reflect and take action on civil rights issues across the globe.

Martin Luther King Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January — on January 17 this year. King was an influential civil rights leader — best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day.

Save the date

All kids deserve to learn in a safe, supportive and caring environment. The Great Kindness Challenge provides a powerful tool that actively engages students, teachers, administrators, families and communities in creating a culture of compassion, acceptance, unity and respect.

Our school is proudly participating in a week-long program dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion known as the Great Kindness Challenge. To help our students

practice kindness and put their compassion into action, they will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist. We encourage all students to complete as many acts as possible at school and hope they feel inspired to continue them at home! In addition, students can look forward to kindness spirit days and lunchtime kindness activities. Together, we will lift each other up, cheer each other on and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!

Classroom Spotlight

This week’s classroom spotlight is Mrs. Metzger's STEM Class. Students showed off their STEM knowledge by creating their own robot using vex kits. Programming and building the robot offers students a hands-on approach to their project, allowing them to fully understand how both hardware and software work together. This elective offers studnets experience for many future career choices. Way to go Gators, we are so excited about what you are doing!!

AVID WICOR Showcase

Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, is a proven learning support structure, known as WICOR , that incorporates teaching/learning methodologies in the critical areas of Writing to Learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to Learn. WICOR provides a learning model that educators can use to guide students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels.

Marsh’s teachers have been trained in the WICOR principles and incorporate their proven strategies into their lessons. This week's WICOR spotlight is Mrs. King's Science classroom. Students worked collaboratively to solve problems in a Science Escape Room. The questions forced them to work together, talk problems out, and work as a team. Students reviewed science vocabulary, concepts, classroom rules and expectations, and even did math and word problems. It was clear to see students were having a blast and using their brain power. Way to go Mrs. King you are a WICOR Rock Star!!
